LOS ANGELES - Greg Lakey, a sophomore on the USC men's basketball team this past season, has asked for and been granted a release from his USC scholarship, Trojan head coach Henry Bibby announced today.
Lakey, a 6-foot-8, 200-pound forward, is expected to finish the spring semester at USC before transferring.
"I'm disappointed because Greg Lakey was going to be a big part of our future here at USC, but he decided that this was what he wanted to do," Bibby said. "We want our players to be happy and this is what he feels he needed to do. I enjoyed having him on our team and wish him well."
Lakey, who played in 26 games for USC last season (he started three contests), averaged 4.8 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. He scored a season-high 17 points against California and also led the Trojans in scoring at Arizona with 14 points.
As a freshman in 1997-98, Lakey played in all 28 games for the Trojans and started 19 times (second-most on the team). He earned USCs Best Newcomer Award after averaging 5.3 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.
