
Men's Golf Team Places 19th at NCAA West Regionals

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Arizona State University Sun Devils led wire-to-wire and won the 1999 NCAA Men's West Regional today at the Omni Tucson National Resort (Par-72, 7,087 yards). ASU, which had three golfers place among the top-eight, posted a 54-hole total of 10-under-par 854 and won the event by eight shots over defending national champion UNLV (862). Today's championship marks the fourth time that the Sun Devils have won or shared the West Regional title in the 10-year history of regional play. Arizona State entered the final round with a six shot lead and carded a 283 today to keep its grip on first place.
UNLV began the day in a tie for second and ended up shooting a 285 today to finish in second outright. As for the Cougars, they shot a 287 and fell to third at 864.
The top-nine finishing teams from this regional qualified for the NCAA Championships and in addition to ASU, UNLV and BYU, the rest of the qualifiying teams included, fourth place California (874), San Diego State & Oregon (875), Washington (883), Colorado State (886) and the host Arizona Wildcats (891). The NCAA Championships will be held June 2-5, in Chaska, Minn., at the Hazeltine National Golf Club. For Arizona, it will mark the 12th consecutive year that it has advanced to the NCAA Championships.
Individually, Jeff Quinney of Arizona State also maintained his second round lead and claimed medalist honors with a 7-under-par 209 total. He used a 1-under-par 70 today to win the tourney by three shots over UNLV's Michael Kirk and Colorado State's Nigel Spence, who both finished at 4-under-par 212. There was a two-way tie for fourth at 213 between BYU's Billy Harvey and California's Dong Yi. Harvey shot a 72 today, while Yi finished with a 71.
