LOS ANGELES - The Janet Evans Invitational concluded Sunday. Complete coverage of the event is as follows:
Dolan Tie with 15-Year-Old Peirsol Highlights Day Two
Fifteen-year old Aaron Peirsol and Olympic gold medalist Tom Dolan swam to a tie in the 200m backstroke, highlighting a competitive second day at the 5th annual Janet Evans Invitational on Friday (July 24) at the USC McDonald's Swim Stadium in the meet hosted by USC and presented by Speedo.
Peirsol, who will enter Newport (Calif.) Harbor High this fall, actually led Dolan with 50 meters to go but the veteran caught the teenager at the wall as both finished in 2:04.34.
"I was trying to put it out of my mind, swimming next him," Peirsol said. "It was kind of intimidating. But I was still trying to take the swim out fast. I wasn't really worried how I finished because I was swimming next to an Olympic gold medalist."
USC's Lindsay Benko, a senior, posted an impressive win in the 400m freestyle, winning in 4:19.01, taking the event less than 30 minutes after competing in the 200m backstroke. She fought off a late charge from Wisconsin Aquatics' Ellen Stonebraker (4:19.48) to secure the win.
"I was a little nervous entering the race but the 200 back kind of warmed me up," Benko said. "It was a really good time for me at this time of the season."
Liesl Kolbisen of Hillenbrand Aquatics opened the second day of the meet by winning the 100m freestyle in 57.34, holding off Stanford's Gabrielle Rose (57.53). Rose's Stanford teammate, Sabir Muhammad, won the men's 100m freestyle in 51.89, beating fellow Cardinal swimmer Dod Wales (51.94).
U.S. Olympian Trina Jackson of Arizona won the 200m butterfly in 2:15.73, edging Santa Clara Aquatics' Angie Wester-Krieg (2:15.75). U.S. Olympic silver medalist Tom Malchow of Club Wolverine posted a convincing win in the men's 200m butterfly in 1:59.04, more than three seconds ahead of second-place Ugur Taner of Hillenbrand.
U.S. National teamer B.J. Bedford won the women's 200m backstroke in 2:14.35, also winning by more than three seconds. Arizona swimmer Ryk Neethling won his second event of the meet by taking the men's 400m freestyle in 3:55.97, sending Hillenbrand club teammate Taner (3:59.62) to his second second-place finish.
The meet continues Saturday and Sunday (July 25-26) with prelims beginning at 9 a.m. and finals starting at 5 p.m. each day.
Caverly, 13, Wins 200 Breast Over Beard; Neethling Wins Third Title on Day Three
Kristen Caverly, 13, of Irvine Novaquatics defeated Olympic gold medalist and club teammate Amanda Beard, 16, in the 200m breaststroke and Arizona's Ryk Neethling won his third title on the third day of the 5th annual Janet Evans Invitational on Saturday (July 25) at the USC McDonald's Swim Stadium in the meet hosted by USC and presented by Speedo.
Caverly won the 200m breast in 2:33.46, though she actually set a personal best in the preliminaries in 2:32.89. She led the final wire-to-wire, holding off the second-place Beard (2:35.87). Arizona NCAA champion Ryk Neethling of Hillenbrand (Tucson, Ariz.) won his third title of the meet with an easy win in the 200m free in 1:50.74. Olympic silver medalist Tom Malchow of Club Wolverine took second (1:52.37).
"I'm in the middle of resting for the Goodwill Games but I'm still trying to swim fast," said Neethling, who is from South Africa. "It's hard to do but it seems to be working."
In one of the closest races of the day, Jamie Cail, a U.S. National teamer from Golden West Swim Club, came from behind to win the women's 400m IM in 4:50.65, beating USC All-American sophomore Brittany White (4:51.22). Fellow Trojan sophomore All-American Corrie Murphy actually led for most of the race, but was caught from behind in the last 25 meters and finished third (4:51.89).
"That was my best unshaved time so I'm pretty happy with that," Cail said. "I think I had a pretty good last leg in the freestyle."
Talor Bendel of Club Wolverine led for most of the women's 200m freestyle and was a clearcut winner (2:02.93) over second-place and top qualifier Ellen Stonebraker (2:03.49) of Wisconsin Aquatics. U.S. National team swimmer B.J. Bedford won her second title of the meet by taking the women's 50m freestyle in 26.11, topping second-place Alison Sheppard (26.40) of Scotland.
Sabir Muhammad from Santa Clara Aquatics and an All-American at Stanford won the men's 50m freestyle in 23.10, edging Irvine Novaquatics' Jason Lesak (23.31) and Felipe Delgado (23.54). Muhammad's Cardinal teammate, Tom Wilkens, also swimming for Santa Clara, won the men's 200m breaststroke in 2:16.57. He beat Irvine Novaquatics' Steven West (2:16.58), though West did set a meet record (2:16.43) in the morning prelims.
Ratapong Sirisanont, swimming for Mission Viejo, won the men's 400m IM in 4:23.49, beating Wilkens (4:25.68) and U.S. Olympic gold medalist Tom Dolan (4:27.80), who is also the world record holder in the event. Trojan Swim Club's 800m relay of Melissa Pavlik, Casey Murphy, Paige Francis and Lindsay Benko finished first in 8:23.56. Hillenbrand's men's 800m relay of Ryno Markgraaff, Ugur Taner, Chris Cunningham and Neethling also won (7:34.96).
The meet concludes Sunday (July 26) with preliminaries beginning at 9 a.m. and finals starting at 5 p.m. The order of events are: 100 Butterfly, 100 Backstroke, 100 Breaststroke, 200 IM, 1500 Freestyle, 400 Medley Relay

Bedford, Muhammad Post Meet Records, Win Third Titles Each on Final Day
U.S. National team veteran B.J. Bedford and Stanford All-American Sabir Muhammad both posted meet records and finished the weekend with three titles apiece as they highlighted the final day of the 5th annual Janet Evans Invitational on Sunday (July 26) at the USC McDonald's Swim Stadium in the meet hosted by USC and presented by Speedo.
Muhammad won a pair of events on Sunday, setting his meet record with a 53.97 in the 100m butterfly in addition to his first-place mark in the 100m backstroke (57.23). Muhammad finished ahead of Hillenbrand's Martin Pepper (54.82) in the fly and beat Justin Ewers (57.43) of the Arizona Marlins in the back.
"This was a dress rehearsal for (U.S.) nationals in three weeks and I'm right on track," Muhammad said. "I wanted to come here and swim fast and I did. This meet is very good preparation for nationals (Aug. 11-15 in Clovis, Calif.). There are a lot of very good swimmers here but the competition is not too much where you get stressed out."
Bedford set her meet record in her third win of the weekend by taking the women's 100m backstroke in 1:01.69, a full two seconds ahead of second-place finisher Denali Knapp of Hillenbrand.
"I've had a lot of trouble this summer, between changing teams and deciding whether I would still swim and it seems it's finally working out in my favor," said Bedford, currently training with the Colorado Springs Swim Team. "I just came here to get some competition with some fast people. I just started resting on Monday and this is encouraging to say the least."
Three USC swimmers each posted one win apiece as senior Karen Campbell won the 100m butterfly (1:02.17), sophomore Alexis Binder won the 1500m freestyle (16:43.76) and sophomore Corrie Murphy took the 200m IM (2:20.10).
Campbell led from the start in the fly, edging Wisconsin Aquatics' Gina Panighetti (1:02.93). Murphy, who led the 400m IM with 25 meters to go only to finish third, held a large lead after 100 meters and held off 13-year old Carly Geehr of Rose Bowl Aquatics (2:20.15) for the win.
Binder, who also won the 800m freestyle on Thursday, came from behind in posting a personal best. Golden West's Jamie Cail (16:48.45) led for more than half the race but Binder caught her after 900 meters and led the rest of the way.
Arizona NCAA titlist Ryk Neethling of Hillenbrand, a South African native, easily won the men's 1500m freestyle in 15:26.59, earning his fourth victory of the meet. He missed a meet record by less than half a second.
"I am ecstatic with the swims this weekend," said Neethling, who was participating in his first Janet Evans Invitational. "It's been a really good meet for me."
Stanford's Gabrielle Rose won the women's 100m breast in 1:12.38, holding off Irvine Novaquatics' teenage tandem of 13-year old Kristen Caverly (1:12.56) and 16-year old Olympic gold medalist Amanda Beard (1:12.61).
Irvine Novaquatics' Steven West won the men's 100m breaststroke in 1:03.52, beating Santa Clara's Tom Wilkens (1:04.80). Wilkens earned his second title of the meet shortly after by taking the men's 200m IM in 2:05.13, edging Sirisanont Ratapong of Mission Viejo (2:05.14).
Hillenbrand's women's 400m medley relay of Denali Knapp, Anna Wilson, Shannon Hosack and Liesl Kolbisen won in 4:17.26.
Club Wolverine's men's 400m medley relay of Trevor Runberg, Jeff Flermoen, Tom Malchow and Joe Tristan won in 3:52.19.
