LOS ANGELES - The No. 16 USC baseball team lost to Washington, 8-7, in a Pacific-10 Conference game on Saturday afternoon at Dedeaux Field, allowing Stanford to clinch the 1999 Pac-10 title.
Both USC (32-23 overall, 16-7 Pac-10) and Stanford (18-5 Pac-10) lost on Saturday, allowing the Cardinal to retain a two- game lead with just one game to play. Washington improved to 32-20 and 12-11 and improved its chances for an NCAA Tournament bid.
The big inning for the Huskies came in the top of the seventh when they scored five runs, erasing a 5-3 USC lead and giving them an 8-5 lead. Senior RF Bryan Williamson had a two-run single, senior DH Pete Orgill had a two-run double and senior 3B Kevin Ticen had an RBI double.
The Trojans nearly came back. Junior DH Carlos Casillas hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 8-7. Then, in the bottom of the eighth with runners on first and third and one out, senior CF Brad Ticehurst ripped a line drive almost over the head of Washington freshman 2B Brent Robertson. But Robertson knocked the ball down and turned a double play.
Despite allowing seven runs in seven innings, Washington sophomore RHP Jeff Carlsen (8-1) got the win. He had four strikeouts and gave up nine hits and one walk. USC senior RHP Justin Lehr (6-2) took the loss, his first loss in seven decisions.
Orgill and Ticen each had two hits for Washington. Ticehurst had two hits along with his 10th home run, and Casillas and senior LF Jason Lane also had two hits each.
USC and Washington meet again on Sunday at 1 p.m., the regular-season finale for the Trojans.
