AUSTIN, Texas - Three Texas pitchers combined to strike out 12 USC batters as the Longhorns defeated the No. 1 Trojans, 5-3, in the first of three games at Disch-Falk Field on Friday night.
USC fell to 1-1, while Texas improved to 3-0.
The Trojans got off to a good start as senior CF Brad Ticehurst doubled home senior RF Greg Hanoian in the top of the first.
Sophomore RHP Rik Currier (1-1) also got off to a fast start, retiring the first seven Texas batters, but then struggled and only went 3 1/3 innings, giving up six hits, four runs and two walks.
USC cut into Texas' lead when junior C Eric Munson scored on an error in the top of the fifth, making it 4-2. But Texas came back with another run to go up 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth.
The Trojans' final run came in the top of the seventh when Munson doubled in sophomore SS Seth Davidson.
Ticehurst went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Trojans.
Both teams swung wood bats, due to the ongoing negotiations between the Pacific-10 Conference and Louisville Slugger for an indemnification agreement toward the use of aluminum bats.
The two teams meet again on Saturday (Feb. 6) at 1 p.m.
