Los Angeles - Guard Desmon Farmer from Northwestern High in Flint, Mich., has signed a letter of intent with USC, men's basketball coach Henry Bibby announced today.
"We feel very fortunate to be able to go into Michigan and get the top senior out of the state," Bibby said. "Desmon is a fine athlete with great leadership qualities and he brings a lot of intangibles that we're excited to have. He's a total winner. We feel he exemplifies where this program is going."
The 6-foot-4 Farmer was named a 1999 All-American by Street & Smith's (High Honorable Mention) and USA Today (Honorable Mention). Bob Gibbons ranks Farmer as the No. 22 player in the country and Hoop Scoop lists him as a top 5 wing guard. He is listed by ESPN.com as the No. 6 wing guard in the country and the No. 36 player overall. The Sporting News listed Farmer, a Michigan Mr. Basketball candidate, as the No. 28 player in the country.
A Detroit News Michigan All-State third team selectee as a junior in 1999, he averaged 18 points, 9.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists, leading the Wildcats to a 22-2 record and the state regional playoffs. He shot 63.5 percent from the field (120-of-189) last year and made 49-of-123 three pointers (39.8 percent). He also shot 73.3 percent from the foul line.
A four-year starter, Farmer averaged 15 points as a sophomore and led his team to the state semifinals in 1998.
He also played football from 1997-1999, playing quarterback and wide receiver.
Other notable athletes to come out of Northwestern High include Los Angeles Laker Glen Rice, Kansas City Chief wide receiver Andre Rison and former Trojan basketball player Anthony Pendleton.
