LOS ANGELES - Junior midfielder Isabelle Harvey had two assists, enabling her to become the first USC women's soccer player ever to reach the century mark in points, as the No. 10 Women of Troy routed Washington State, 4-0, at the Coliseum on Sunday in a Pacific-10 Conference match.
Senior forward Kaylee Whitfield (Santa Ana/El Modena HS), who missed the 1998 season with a pair of knee injuries, scored her first two goals of 1999 after being honored on Senior Day, as it was USC's final regular-season home match.
USC (11-3 overall, 4-0 Pac-10) has now won a season-high five straight and tied a school record with its eighth shutout of the season. Washington State fell to 6-7, 0-3.
"From top to bottom, we played very well," USC Coach Jim Millinder said. "We jumped on them quick, and didn't let up, which was something we needed after our last few matches. We're right where we need to be, at 4-0 in the Pac-10."
Whitfield scored the first goal in the 16th minute off assists from Harvey (Quebec, Canada) and senior midfielder Kim Clark (Cupertino/Monta Vista HS). Harvey's assist gave her 100 points in her career. Harvey also had an assist on USC's second goal, as she lifted a high ball into the box. WSU sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Jorgensen, challenged by freshman forward Jackie Fodor (Winnetka/Chatsworth HS), couldn't control the ball and it was knocked in by Fodor in the 34th minute.
USC extended its lead to 3-0 in the 56th minute. Off assists from junior midfielder Andrea Warner (Dana Point/Dana Hills HS) and Clark, freshman midfielder Ali Fennell (Santa Ana/Mater Dei HS) one-timed a goal home.
USC made it 4-0 in the 84th minute on Whitfield's second goal. Sophomore forward Brittany Savelkoul (Seal Beach/Los Alamitos HS) did nearly all the work, dribbling up the field and beating a couple of WSU defenders. Then, with the goalkeeper out of position, she slid the ball over to Whitfield, who scored easily.
USC outshot Washington State, 21-6. The Cougars had a few good scoring chances in the second half, particularly off the foot of junior forward Deka DeWitt, but USC sophomore goalkeeper Shaelyn Fernandes (San Jose/Presentation HS), who played the final 45 minutes, made four second-half saves.
Next weekend, USC visits California (Oct. 22) and Stanford (Oct. 24).
