Sasha Bucur returns to the pool deck at USC to serve as an assistant coach on head coach Marko Pintaric’s 2025 men’s staff. Bucur most recently served as a volunteer assistant coach for the USC water polo program from 2019-23. Prior to that, he coached at USC under former head coach Jovan Vavic for the men from 1991-99 and with the women in their inaugural season in 1995. His coaching experience also includes time with Trojan Club and LA Premier Water Polo Club.
A native of Bucharest, Romania, Bucur began playing water polo at the age of 10. He was a member of the Romanian Junior National Team and his club team won the National Club Championships three times.
Bucur came to the United States with his family in 1985 and played water polo for New York Athletic Club for five years (1986-90). He has master’s degrees in computer science and applied demography as well as a PhD in sociology from USC. He earned his undergraduate degree in mathematics and computer science from Sacred Heart University in 1990.
