Chase Bloch, a 2013 All-American and a 2014 Trojan co-captain who was also a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic honoree, is entering his eighth season as an assistant coach for the USC men's and women's swimming team and the second under head coach Jeremy Kipp.
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Bloch served as the head swim coach for Trinidad and Tobago. Trojan great Dylan Carter was one of many accomplished swimmers under Bloch's instruction in Tokyo.
Since joining the staff, Bloch has helped lead the men’s squad to a Pac-12 title in 2015 (his first year as a Trojan coach), the women’s team to a conference title in 2016 and to a combined seven top 10 finishes at the NCAA Championships. Bloch, who spent his first six seasons on USC’s staff under then-head coach Dave Salo, helped Louise Hansson become the NCAA’s most dominant butterflyer during the 2019-20 seasons. Hansson, as a senior, repeated as a three-time Pac-12 champion in 2020 with wins in the 200y IM and the 100y and 200y fly and was set to defend her NCAA crowns in both fly events when the season was cut short a week before the championships. Overall, 18 Trojans earned 2020 CSCAA All-American honors.
In 2019, Bloch was part of a staff that saw then-junior Hansson repeat as an NCAA champion in the 100y fly with an NCAA record (49.26) while also winning the 200y fly in an upset. Hansson, who additionally won three Pac-12 titles, led five Trojan women who were All-Americans. The men's squad was led by senior Carsten Vissering, who finished second in the 100y breast at the NCAAs. He led four Trojan All-Americans. Vissering won his second Pac-12 title in the 100y breast while freshman Victor Johansson won the 500y free title.
Bloch helped lead the USC men to a sixth-place finish at the 2018 NCAA Championships, the Trojans producing eight All-Americans while the squad won the program's first NCAA title in the 200y medley relay. The women's team, with five All-Americans, finished 12th and was highlighted by Louise Hansson winning that program's first NCAA crown in the 100y fly.
Bloch, who graduated in 2014 with a degree in Communications, has also guided Trojan swimmers on the international scene, coaching All-American Dylan Carter at the 2015 World Championships and at the 2018 Commonwealth Games as well as coaching All-American Robert Glinta at the 2017 European Championships.
Bloch was a USC co-captain as a 2014 senior and was a Pac-12 finalist in the 200y back who also was a 2014 Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention pick. In addition to taking sixth in the final of the 200y back at the Pac-12s, he was ninth in the 100y fly and 11th in the 100y back.
Bloch nabbed his first career All-American honor as a 2013 junior as part of USC’s 200y medley relay that finished fifth at the 2013 NCAA Championships in a then-school record 1:24.54.
