2018/JUNIOR: After transitioning from the bullpen to being a starter midway through the season, Bates led the starting rotation with a 3.14 ERA, allowing 28 runs in 77.1 innings, making nine starts in 18 appearances … Was selected by the San Francisco Giants with the 226th pick (8th round) of the 2018 MLB Draft … Received All Pac-12 honorable mention … Finished sixth in the conference in WHIP (1.07) and seventh in hits-per-nine innings (7.22) … Led the team in strikeouts (79), wins (6) and opponent batting average (.218) … Walked just 21 batters … Threw a season high 7.2 innings against Arizona State on 4/7, striking out a career-high nine batters and letting up only one run … Recorded 7.0 innings pitched and seven or more strikeouts in each of his last four starts, including an eight-strikeout shutout against Oregon State on 5/20.
