USC baseball head coach Andy Stankiewicz announced the hiring of Sean Allen as the Trojans’ pitching coach on June 27, 2024. The 2021 National Assistant Coach of the Year, Allen has three trips to Omaha under his belt as he comes to USC after two seasons at Ohio State and six seasons at Texas prior to that.
Consistently regarded as one of the top assistant coaches in the country, Allen was named D1Baseball’s 2021 Assistant Coach of the Year. His 2022 hiring at Ohio State ranked No. 4 in the outlet’s Top 30 Assistant Coach Hires, and he was named to the list of 100 Assistant Coaches Athletic Directors Should Know after the 2023 season. In his 22 seasons as an assistant coach (not counting the shortened 2020 season), Allen’s teams have made the postseason 14 times, including three appearances in the College World Series.
“We are very excited to announce Sean Allen as our new pitching coach,” said Stankiewicz, who guided the Trojans to the Pac-12 title game in his second season at the helm in 2024. “Sean’s reputation in the game is unmatched. First and foremost, he is a baseball coach who knows how to build relationships with student-athletes, staff, administration and recruits. His accolades as a pitching coach are well-documented, and the way he manages and develops a pitching staff is perfect for where we are headed as a program. He knows the national landscape of college baseball and will help us build our brand across the country. Our pitchers, now and in the future, could not be in better hands. It’s a great honor to welcome Sean and his wife Stephanie to the Trojan Family.”
No stranger to the Big Ten Conference, Allen was hired to join Bill Mosiello’s staff at Ohio State in July of 2022 and he served as the program’s associate head coach/pitching coach and co-recruiting coordinator for the past two seasons. He helped lead the Buckeyes to winning campaigns both years and saw a pair of Ohio State pitchers drafted after his first season in Columbus (Isaiah Coupet – Rockies, Josh Timmerman – Brewers). Allen also produced a pair of All-Big Ten pitchers this past season in Blaine Wynk and Gavin DeVooght.
“I just want to say thank you to Coach Stankiewicz for this amazing opportunity,” said Allen. “USC is one of the blue bloods in college baseball and I’m thrilled to be a part of such a tradition-rich program. Stephanie and I can’t wait to join the Trojan Family.”
Allen previously served on David Pierce’s staffs for 11 seasons at Texas (2017-22), Tulane (2015-16) and Sam Houston State (2021-14). He was Texas’ hitting coach and recruiting coordinator from 2017-19 and transitioned to the role of pitching coach in 2020, remaining the Longhorns’ recruiting coordinator through the end of his tenure in Austin. He helped lead Texas to College World Series appearances in three of his six seasons at UT (2018, 2021, 2022) and to the postseason four times overall (2017, 2018, 2021, 2022).
In 2022, the Texas pitching staff ranked 26th nationally and led the Big 12 with a 4.22 ERA en route to a second straight College World Series appearance that year. The 2021 season saw Texas come just one game shy of the CWS Final. Under Allen’s guidance, Longhorn pitchers compiled the nation’s best ERA of 2.93 in 2021. The front end of Allen’s pitching staff was led by a pair of All-Big 12 starters, the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year Ty Madden and Tristan Stevens, and the back end of the bullpen was secured by the Freshman All-American duo of Aaron Nixon and Tanner Witt.
The Texas pitching staff also flourished under Allen during the shortened 2020 season, compiling a 2.59 ERA with 168 strikeouts in 153 innings. Junior RHP Bryce Elder was named to the shortened-season Collegiate Baseball Newspaper All-America second team and freshman LHP Pete Hansen was named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
In 2018, Allen helped the Longhorns to a .271 batting average, a .431 slugging percentage, and 62 home runs — the highest marks for a Texas team in the BBCOR era.
During his three seasons as Texas’ pitching coach, six Longhorn pitchers were selected in the MLB Draft, and during his three seasons as the UT hitting coach, eight position players were selected. Additionally, with Allen heading up the recruiting efforts, the Longhorns’ 2020 class was ranked No. 1 in the nation, the 2019 recruiting class was ranked No. 8 and the 2018 class was rated No. 9.
Prior to Texas, he was Pierce’s lead recruiter at Tulane, playing a major part in leading the Green Wave to NCAA Regional appearances in both of his seasons in New Orleans (2015, 2016). In the duo’s three previous seasons at Sam Houston State (2012-14), they led the Bearkats to three straight Southland Conference titles and three straight NCAA Regional berths.
From 2008-11, Allen was as an assistant at Florida International, where he was recruiting coordinator and pitching coach, and helped guide the Panthers to the postseason in 2010 and 2011. His coaching career began as a student assistant with his alma mater Houston in 2002 and he spent the next five seasons as an assistant coach with the Cougars, helping guide UH to NCAA Tournament appearances in 2002, 2003 and 2006.
A four-year letterman with the Cougars from 1998 to 2001, Allen concluded his playing career as Houston’s all-time leader with 542 assists. During that time, the Cougars competed in an NCAA Super Regional and advanced to NCAA postseason play in three consecutive seasons.
Allen earned his bachelor’s degree in sports administration from Houston in 2001. He is married to the former Stephanie Beyelia, a former soccer standout at UH.
Allen's hiring is contingent upon completion of a successful University background screening.
What they are saying:
“Sean has been a premier coach in the college game for many years. He has a great track record of recruiting and developing players at a high level. Sean has been a huge part of numerous winning programs and has always done it with class and humility. The Trojans got a great one.”
- Bill Mosiello
Former Ohio State Head Coach
“Coach Allen has had and continues to have a huge impact on my baseball career. During my time at Texas, he helped me figure out my identity as a pitcher. Whether it be biomechanics, pitch repertoire, or game-planning, he constantly worked to find out what was best for me and my career. Our relationship was very important to me my junior year as he helped me prepare for every Friday night and deal with the outside noise of the MLB Draft. Coach Allen will be a great addition to the USC staff and help the program produce great pitchers and men. Coach is always a phone call away and I look forward to visiting Southern California soon.”
