The Community Bowl originated in 2011, when NCAA sanctions precluded USC's football team from appearing in a postseason bowl game. Trojan student-athletes decided to dedicate a day to giving back to the community instead.
This Saturday, approximately 120 Trojans visited Cochran Middle School, which has the highest population of homeless and foster care children of any middle school in Los Angeles County. The student-athletes attended a pep rally hosted by LAUSD Director of Operations Deborah Brandy, then spent the day helping Cochran Middle schoolers beautify their campus and get some exercise.
Members of USC's baseball, women's tennis, beach volleyball, lacrosse, track & field, golf and diving teams helped repaint the school's planter boxes and lunch benches. They also painted two murals on the school's handball courts, refurbished the campus' garden and re-netted 25 basketball hoops. As a Trojan Legacy Gift, Trojan Outreach redesigned six basketball backboards with USC logos.
Trojans and Cochran Middle School students played basketball and soccer together later in the day, and Trojan Outreach also gifted the school a set of flag football equipment to encourage physical activity.
