A rule enacted after the 2005 season, players are prohibited from wearing tinted visors so that medical personnel can see their eyes and appropriately diagnose after spinal injuries or concussions. Since the rule was put in place, players have used clear plastic visors, though some of Oregon's players employed slightly tinted visors during their game at Boise State last Thursday.
And USC's equipment staffers, who affix only clear plastic visors on Trojan helmets, definitely noticed Oregon's oversight last week.
"Other schools aren't as strict with adhering to that rule as we are," football equipment coordinator Tino Dominguez said. "And the referees aren't doing anything about it or enforcing it yet."
