This Season: A 2019 senior, Alex Valente returns as one of the Pac-12's top butterflyers who could challenge for a conference crown. He brings strong dual meet scoring and is looking to become an NCAA scorer after two trips to nationals.
2018: Valente’s 2018 junior campaign was highlighted by his first career Pac-12 final in the 200y fly, where he finished fourth in a PR 1:43.06. He was also 10th in the 100y fly (46.02) … He posted a pair of second swims at the Texas Invitational, taking 10th in the 200y fly (1:44.14) and 17th in the 100y fly (46.69) … He won the 100y and 200y fly in USC’s win over Wisconsin in January and posted a pair of wins in USC’s dual meet wins over Arizona and Arizona State.
2017: Valente raced in two events at the 2017 NCAA Championships as a sophomore, tying for 27th in the 200y fly (1:43.91) and taking 33rd in the 100y fly (46.58) … At the 2017 Pac-12 Championships, he repeated as a 100y fly finalist, taking eighth in 46.61 after a 46.02 in prelims. He also won the B final of the 200y fly (1:44.20) and tied for 35th in the 50y free (20.75) … He won two dual meet races on the year.
2016: Valente's 2016 freshman season was highlighted by a second-place finish in the 100y fly at the Pac-12 Championships, where he finished in second (46.10) by a mere 0.02 (behind Cal's Justin Lynch). His 46.05 in prelims was a season-best and 0.05 off his PR ... He was 15th in the 100y back (49.46, PR 47.96 in prelims) and in the 200y fly (1:47.38, 1:45.33 in prelims) ... He also swam the fly leg on USC's second-place 200y and 400y medley relays ... At the 2016 NCAAs, he was 21st in the 200y fly (1:43.79, PR), 25th in the 100y fly (46.53) and swam on USC's 18th-place 200y medley relay ... At the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials, he was 45th in the 100m fly (54.13) and 65th in the 200m fly (2:03.67).
High School: Valente, who prepped at Dos Pueblos High in Goleta, Calif., was a two-time CIF California State finalist as a 2015 senior, finishing second in the 100y fly (47.01) and seventh in the 100y back (49.47) ... At the 2015 CIF Southern Section Championships, he won the 100y fly (46.00) and was fourth in the 100y back (48.72). He also won the 100y fly at the 2014 CIF Southern Section meet ... He raced in two events at the 2015 U.S. Summer Nationals, finishing 24th in the 100m fly and 76th in the 200m fly ... He won a pair of races at the 2014 Speedo Champions Series-California, taking the 100y (48.58) and 200y fly (1:44.87) and posted top 20 finishes in the 50m, 100m and 200m fly at the 2014 U.S. Summer Nationals. Also in 2014, he won gold in the 100m fly at the Junior Pan Pacs ... He is a former NAG (15-16) record holder in the 100y fly, set in 2014.
