The Trojans are above the cutline heading into Wednesday’s final round.
BERMUDA RUN, N.C. — The USC Men's Golf Team is above the cut line in fifth place out of 14 teams after the second round of play at the NCAA Winston-Salem Regional, held at Bermuda Run Country Club in Bermuda Run, N.C. on Tuesday, May 19.
On a day where the teams battled windy conditions early, the Trojans fired a 279 to bring the team to a 577 (-11) total heading into the final round. USC is seven strokes behind fourth-place Mississippi State and five strokes ahead of sixth-place NC State. The top five teams and the top individual from a non-qualifying team will punch their tickets to Carlsbad, Calif. for the NCAA Championships, held at the Omni La Costa Resort from May 28-June 3.
Junior Nicolas Dominguez continues to lead the Trojans after firing a 70 (-1) for his second round under par. He began the front side with three birdies over the first five holes, yet ran into trouble with a double-bogey on the par-4 No. 15 before birdying No. 16. However, he had a rocky stretch on the back side with three bogeys over six holes. Two more birdies on the back side helped keep his score under par and tie for 10th with a 137 (-5) total.
Senior Antonio Safa had USC's best round of the day with a 68 (-3), which moved him into a tie for 14th with a 138 (-4) total. Safa had two birdies on the front side and his lone bogey of the day on the par-3 No. 16, yet he continued lowering his score with two birdies on a bogey-free back side.
Sophomore Jack Buchanan slid down to a tie for 31st after firing a 73 (+2) that brought his score to a 142 (E) total. Buchanan had his lone birdie on the front side, but a double-bogey on No. 16 and a bogey on No. 6 pushed his score over par.
Fellow sophomore Jaden Dumdumaya is in a tie for 38th after firing a 71 (E) to give him a 143 (+1) total heading into the final round. The sophomore went under par on the front side with a birdie on the par-4 No. 14, yet he ran into trouble on the back side with two bogeys. A birdie on No. 6 helped him lower his score back to par.
Subbing in for the second round, freshman Raghav Gulati fired a 70 (-1) in his NCAA postseason debut. Gulati stayed at par on the front side before running into trouble with a bogey after making the turn. However, he birdied No. 3 and had an eagle on the par-5 No. 4 to push his score under par. All told, he had a birdie, an eagle and two bogeys all on the back side.
USC makes the final push to qualify for its first NCAA Championship appearance since 2019 tomorrow at 5 a.m. PT.
