Edwards Named B1G Pitcher of the Year as Six Trojans Honored with All-Big Ten Recognition

LOS ANGELES – The Big Ten postseason awards were released on Tuesday (May 19) and six USC baseball players earned honors, headlined by Mason Edwards being named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year.
In addition to Edwards being named the conference's top pitcher, he and Grant Govel were named to the All-Big Ten first team and Adam Troy and Jack Basseer earned second team honors. Diego Velazquez was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team and Andrew Lamb earned the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. Govel was also named to the Big Ten's All-Defensive Team.
Mason Edwards
Edwards has been one of the top pitchers not only in the Big Ten, but in the country all season long, compiling an 8-0 record with a 1.49 ERA and 154 strikeouts in 84.1 innings pitched. Both Edwards' ERA and strikeout totals lead the conference, and his strikeout per nine rate of 16.43 and hits allowed per nine of 4.59 lead the nation.
The junior lefty's 154 strikeouts are already the fifth most in a single season by a USC pitcher, and the total leads the nation by 29 strikeouts. His 113 strikeouts in conference play are a Big Ten record. Edwards earned Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honors four times this season and is a semifinalist for both the National Pitcher of the Year and Golden Spikes awards.
Grant Govel
Govel has been a second ace for the Trojans pitching on Saturdays this season, posting a 10-2 record with a 2.76 ERA in 84.2 innings pitched. The sophomore righty has 85 strikeouts to just 11 walks this year, with his 7.73 strikeout-to-walk ratio leading the conference and sitting eighth in the nation and his 0.83 WHIP leading the country. Govel has earned Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honors three times and been named to the midseason watch lists for the Golden Spikes and National Pitcher of the Year awards.
Jack Basseer
Basseer has established himself as USC's top hitter this season, posting a .364 batting average with 33 RBI and 37 runs scored. The senior outfielder has 10 home runs, two triples and 14 doubles this season, leading USC with an 1.151 OPS. Basseer was named the Big Ten Player of the Week after hitting .614 with three homers in a sweep of Nevada.
Adam Troy
Troy has served as the Trojans' closer all season, compiling 12 saves and a 3.34 ERA in 27 relief appearances and 29.2 innings pitched. His 12 saves are second in the Big Ten and third most in the nation. Troy has struck out 37 batters this season and held opponents to a .205 batting average.
Diego Velazquez
Velazques has established himself as an impact arm as a freshman this season, posting a 4.13 ERA in 14 relief appearances and four starts. Over the course of 28.1 innings pitched, Velazquez has struck out 31 batters while walking just six batters.
Andrew Lamb
Lamb earned USC's Big Ten Sportsmanship award for the second straight season after appearing in 48 games and making 43 starts while posting a .267 batting average, with 10 homers and 33 RBI. The Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honors student-athletes who distinguish themselves through sportsmanship, ethical behavior, academics and citizenship.
