Three Trojans are in the top 10 on the first day of the conference championship.
GLENDALE, Calif. — The No. 2 USC Women's Golf team leads the way after the first round of the Big Ten Championship, held at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale, Calif. on Friday, April 24.
Playing in near-perfect conditions on the par-70, 6,086-yard track, the Trojans have a five-stroke lead with a 277 (-3) through the first 18 holes of play. USC is the lone team under par thanks to having three players tied for sixth at -1: Jasmine Koo, Elise Lee and Catherine Park. Illinois and Ohio State are tied for second at 282 (+2), while Illinois senior Anna Ritter broke the Big Ten Championship course record at Oakmont by firing a 65 (-5) to lead all players.
Koo played consistent golf throughout the day, getting through the front side with two birdies and no bogeys. However, the sophomore ran into trouble with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 12 and 13 before pushing her score under par on the par-3 No. 16. She and two of her teammates are in a five-way tie for sixth.
After a bogey on the first hole, sophomore Lee bounced back with two birdies on the front side, then moved into the top five with a birdie on No. 10. A bogey on No. 15 sent her back into a tie for sixth.
Senior Catherine Park also played consistent golf with two birdies and just one bogey on the day. She was at par for eight consecutive holes on the back side before having a birdie on the par-5 No. 18.
Junior Bailey Shoemaker had an eventful start to her first round with three bogeys and three birdies to keep her score at par after making the turn. She remained at par throughout the back side to tie for 11th with a 70 (E).
Rounding out the Trojans, sophomore Kylie Chong is in a tie for 30th after firing a 73 (+3). Chong was at par at the turn, but three consecutive bogeys on the back side brought her score above par.
USC begins the second round of the Big Ten Championship tomorrow at 10:10 a.m. PT, when Kylie Chong tees off on No. 1. Fans are encouraged to attend the tournament at Oakmont Country Club, which is free to the public.
