No. 23 USC Baseball Outlasts Purdue, 4-3

LOS ANGELES – In a game that saw the momentum shift back and forth, the No. 23 USC baseball team outlasted Purdue, 4-3, to take the opening game of a three-game series at Dedeaux Field.
The Trojans scored the game-tying and go-ahead runs in the sixth, and then stranded the bases loaded in the ninth to move to 32-11 on the year and 14-8 in Big Ten play. Purdue falls to 28-13, 15-7.
After Purdue erased an early 2-0 USC lead, the Trojans manufactured a pair of runs on an RBI groundout to tie the game and then taking the lead on a throwing error during a steal attempt at second.
Maddox Riske led the sixth inning off with an infield single and then later scored on a grounder to second by Augie Lopez. Adrian Lopez also singled in the inning and would score after Kevin Takeuchi took off for second and forced a throwing error by the Purdue catcher as he tried to pump fake the throwdown only to have it squirt away.
Diego Velazquez got the win after throwing scoreless sixth and seventh innings, striking out two while giving up just one hit and no walks. Andrew Johnson got the Trojans out of a jam to end the eighth, stranding runners on second and third with a groundout.
Adam Troy got into trouble after a leadoff double in the ninth, but eventually got an infield fly and then a strikeout to strand the bases loaded and record his 11th save of the year.
Takeuchi gave USC the early lead with a two-run homer in the first inning. Purdue answered with three runs in the top of the second.
The three runs in the second were the only Mason Edwards would allow in his start as the Trojan lefty struck out 12 batters and gave up two hits in 5.0 innings of work.
