The Trojans have a three-stroke lead through 30 holes of play before the round was stopped due to darkness.
MARICOPA, Ariz. — Kicking off the penultimate regular-season tournament, the USC Men's Golf team leads the 25-team field after the first day of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, held at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz. on Tuesday, March 31.
When play was stopped due to darkness, the Trojans led with a 447 (-22) after 30 holes of play at the par-72, 7,330-yard course. The second round will resume tomorrow with a shotgun start around 7:15 a.m. PT with the third round to follow.
Thanks to having all four scorers in the top 20, USC took a lead late in the six-and-a-half-hour first round and maintained its position throughout the warm and windy day. The Trojans have a three-stroke lead over Arkansas State and GCU, who are tied for second place.
Graduate senior Luke Stock leads the Trojans in a tie for first place with a -9 through 30 holes after firing a 66 (-6) in the first round, which not only led the team, but also tied the best round of his career. In the first round, Stock had five birdies on the back side to just one bogey; all told, he had seven birdies and two bogeys in the round. He wrapped up the day with three birdies in his last five holes before play was suspended.
Playing alongside Stock, Buchanan wrapped up the day in a tie for seventh place with a -7 through 30 holes. The sophomore got off to an excellent start with a string of four consecutive birdies from Nos. 6-9 to move him into the lead before he wrapped up his first round 67 (-5) with two more birdies on the back side. In his second round, he moved into a tie for seventh thanks to a pair of birdies on the front side.
Boosted by his 68 (-4) in the first round, senior Antonio Safa is tied for 17th place with a -3 through 29 holes. In his first round, the senior had five birdies and one eagle on the par-5 No. 16 to offset one bogey and one double-bogey on the back side. He rose up to as high as eighth in the first round and hovered around the top 20 throughout the day — even after running into trouble with two bogeys on the back side of his second round.
Sophomore Jaden Dumdumaya made a push late in the afternoon to finish in a tie for 17th place with a -3 through 29 holes. Dumdumaya fired a 71 (-1) in the first round with two birdies and one bogey before making a big move in his second round. The sophomore shook off a bogey to begin his second round with three birdies — including back-to-back birdies on Nos. 13 and 14. All told, he moved up 21 places in the second round.
Rounding out the Trojans, freshman Raghav Gulati is in a tie for 77th place with a +3 through 29 holes.
