No. 4 USC Beach Volleyballs Falls To No.1 UCLA and No. 6 Texas In Honolulu

HONOLULU – No. 4 USC Beach Volleyball (4-2) wrapped up the final day of the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic on Saturday, Feb. 21, with the toughest day of competition against No. 1 UCLA and No. 6 Texas. After a significant weather delay, the Trojans dropped both games, going 3-1 against the Bruins and 3-2 against the Longhorns. With today's games, USC is now 29-22 overall against UCLA and 1-1 overall against Texas.
Ashley Pater and Kennedy Coakley played in the No. 1 spot, going 0-2 on the day. These two started against UCLA's Sally Perez and Maggie Boyd. They started this match off slow and couldn't come back as they dropped this match in two sets with scores of 21-11 and 21-18. Once they returned to the sand against Brecht Piersma and Katie Hashman of Texas, Pater and Coakley were ready for a battle. They went to three sets with the Longhorns, but ultimately lost 18-21, 21-14, 15-17. With these games, Coakley and Pater are 2-4 on the season and 30-8 overall.
In the No. 2 spot were Sarah Wood and Zoey Henson, who won both of their matches and earned Most Outstanding Pair honors for the tournament. They won their first match against Alexa Fernandez and Cassie Dodd of UCLA with scores of 22-20 and 21-18. From there, the duo went on to face Anna Pavelkova and Kacka Pavelkova, taking them down in three sets with scores of 18-21, 21-11 and 15-11. Following the tournament, Henson and Wood remain undefeated on the season.
Quincy Stephens and Kaileigh Truslow played both matches today, competing in the No. 4 spot against UCLA and the No. 3 spot against Texas. Against Ava Williamson and Harper Cooper of the Bruins, they fell in two sets with scores of 21-15 and 21-14. Later in the day against Texas, Stephens and Truslow ended with scores of 21-15 and 21-16 in favor of the Longhorns, ending the day 0-2. With these results, the duo is now 2-4 this season.
Playing in the No. 3 spot against the Bruins were Alana Embry and Madison Goellner. Despite their best efforts, they couldn't prevail against Kaley Matthews and Ensley Alden, resulting in the two-set loss. This puts Embry and Goellner at 2-3 this season.
Coming in at the No. 4 spot and playing their first match of the season were freshman Bella Satterwhite and sophomore Macy Bolyard. They battled with the Longhorns throughout the entire match, but ended with the Trojans dropping the match in two sets with scores of 21-17 and 25-23.
The fifth pair for the Women of Troy was Kyra Zaengle and Calinda Kok, who played in this position all tournament long. Their first match against UCLA did not finish. By the time the match was called, the score was tied at 1-1. They came back onto the court later against Macey Butler and Noa Sonnevile of Texas, where Zaengle and Kok were the first USC pair to secure a win with scores of 21-15 and 22-20. At the end of their first tournament together, this duo is now 5-0.
