USC Baseball Completes Opening Weekend Sweep With 8-5 Win Over Pepperdine

LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team finished off an opening weekend sweep of Pepperdine on Sunday afternoon at Dedeaux Field, taking down the Waves 8-5 in the finale.

Andrew Johnson tossed 5.0 scoreless innings in the start to pick up the victory as USC moves to 3-0 on the year and Pepperdine falls to 0-3. Johnson was the third straight USC starter to throw at least 5.0 scoreless innings in their start.

The Trojans took a 7-0 lead into the seventh inning before Pepperdine was able to get on the board. The Waves scored four runs in the seventh to close the gap and tacked on another in the eighth to make it a two-run game.

Jack Basseer would hit a solo-home run in the bottom of the eighth, though, and Adam Troy closed it out in the ninth by striking out the side for his second save of the weekend against his former ball club.

Johnson gave up two hits and walked none in the start, striking out five batters on the afternoon. For the weekend, USC starting pitchers combined to toss 16.0 scoreless innings, giving up three hits and three walks, while striking out 24 batters. Mason Edwards struck out nine in 5.0 scoreless frames on Friday, and Grant Govel tossed 6.0 hitless innings last night, with a career-high 10 strikeouts.

Abbrie Covarrubias, Isaac Cadena and Kevin Takeuchi each drove in a pair for USC. Cadena doubled home the first run of the game in the third inning, followed by a sacrifice fly from Adrian Lopez. Cadena added a sac fly in the fourth as well, following a bases-loaded walk by Covarrubias. Takeuchi capped a four-run fourth for USC with a two-run single to center.

The three wins over Pepperdine marked the second straight season USC has swept opening weekend and the third time in four years.
