Trojans Score Six in the 10th to Take Down Washington, 10-4
May 17, 2025 | Baseball
Ethan Hedges hit a bases-loaded double with two outs in the 10th and Adrian Lopez cleared the bases with a three-run homer to secure the victory for the Trojans. USC improves to 34-20 overall and 18-12 in Big Ten play. Washington falls to 28-26, 17-13. USC securing the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament gives the Trojans the higher seed tiebreaker over both of their opponents in pool play.
Washington erased a 4-0 USC advantage with runs in the sixth and seventh innings and the game would enter extra innings tied at 4-4. The Trojans capitalized on two walks and a Husky error to load the bases and Hedges proceeded to lace the 2-1 pitch into the left center gap to score all three runners. After another walk, Lopez hit the second pitch he saw over the right field fence to make it 10-4 in favor of USC.
Hedges came on to pitch the bottom of the 10th, retiring the side in order to seal the victory. Sax Matson was credited with the win after throwing 2.0 scoreless relief innings to send it to extras.
The Trojans got on the board early with a run in the first, getting three straight singles from Hedges, Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek and Lopez, with Lopez scoring Hedges on the third hit. Andrew Lamb extended the USC lead, driving in a pair with a double down the line in the third, plating Lopez and Martin-Grudzielanek.
Mason Edwards got the start and was dominant, throwing 5.0 scoreless and hitless innings before exiting the game due to being on a pitch count. He struck out seven batters and walked just one, with his lone baserunner allowed coming on the first batter of the game and then being erased on a double play to end the inning. Edwards faced the minimum through five.
Washington put up three runs in the sixth after Edwards exited, getting a two-run homer and an RBI triple off the wall. The Huskies would tie the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.
Matson allowed just one baserunner after Washington tied the game, working around a two-out walk in the eighth and setting the side down in order in the ninth. He struck out three of the seven batters he faced.
