USC Baseball Slugs Way to 16-6 Win at Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS – The USC baseball team posted season highs in hits and runs in the series opener at Minnesota on Friday night, taking down the Golden Gophers 16-6 behind 17 hits.

Adrian Lopez and Richard Tejeda each drove in five runs, and Andrew Johnson tossed six scoreless relief innings as USC moves to 27-14 overall and 12-7 in Big Ten play. Minnesota falls to 20-19, 7-12.

After USC scored a run on a balk in the first innings, the Golden Gophers scored three in the bottom of the first and two in the second to take a 5-1 lead.

The Trojans tied things up with four runs in the third, getting two-run homers from Richard Tejeda and Adrian Lopez. Minnesota came right back with a solo-homer from Josh Fitzgerald in the bottom half of the inning, but Andrew Lamb had the answer with a solo-shot of his own in the top of the fourth to make it 6-6.

Lopez continued his hot hitting with a two-run single in the fifth, giving the Trojans their first lead since the opening frame. USC broke the game open the very next inning, scoring five runs in the sixth to take a 13-6 lead. Tejeda and Lopez each singled home runs in the sixth, Ethan Hedges had a sacrifice fly and Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek hit a two-run double.

Andrew Johnson took over on the mound to get the final out of the third inning and proceeded to throw six scoreless innings as the Trojan bats made their comeback. Johnson gave up just two hits and walked none as he faced just two batters above the minimum in his 6.0 innings of work. Johnson struck out four in the relief outing as he took the win and improved to 2-0 on the year.
