HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – The third-seeded and fifth-ranked USC beach volleyball team (24-9) fell, 3-0, to second-seeded No. 3 Stanford (29-8) in the winner's semifinal of the MPSF Championship at Spiker Beach on Thursday, April 24.
Â
USC fell to 17-4 all-time against the Cardinal and moved to 29-9 in conference tournament duals.
Â
The loss moves the Women of Troy into the loser's bracket semifinal where they will face either California (26-8) or Grand Canyon (23-10) in a dual at 8:45 a.m. PT on Friday (April 25). The Trojans would need to win two more duals to reach the title match. Stanford's win advanced the Cardinal into the winner's final where it will face No. 1 UCLA (30-4) for a spot in the title dual later today (3:30 p.m.).
Â
Stanford scored its first dual point from the middle of the lineup when Kelly Belardi and Charlotta Bell defeated graduate Maya Gessner and junior Mabyn Thomas in straight sets, 21-14, 21-12; and went up, 2-0, with a win at the No. 1 spot when Ruby Sorra and Taylor Wilson collected a 21-16, 21-18 win over sophomore Zoey Henson and junior Madison White.
Â
Moments later, the Cardinal clinched the dual with a third 2-0 win at the No. 4 position when Chloe Hoffman and Logan Tusher delivered a 21-17, 21-16 win over junior Delaney Karl and graduate Ella Larkin.
Â
With the dual decided, play was halted at the Nos. 2 and 5 positions. At five, sophomores Madison Goellner and Kaileigh Truslow had defeated Daria Gusarova and Emmy Sharp, 21-14, in the first set but were down, 17-15, in the second. At two, freshman Kennedy Coakley and sophomore Ashley Pater fell, 21-19, in set one and were up, 17-12, in set two at the stop.
