April 14, 2025 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – After leading the USC baseball team to a 3-1 week and a fifth-straight series win, Abbrie Covarrubias was named the Big Ten Player of the Week on Monday (April 14).
USC picked up a win over LMU on Tuesday and then took two-of-three at Penn State over the weekend as Covarrubias led the team in nearly every major offensive category. He is the third Trojan to earn a Big Ten weekly honor this season, following Grant Govel (Freshman of the Week, Feb. 24) and Caden Aoki (Pitcher of the Week, March 3).
In four starts, the sophomore second baseman led the Trojans in hits (8), RBI (8), runs (5), total bases (15), extra-base hits (4) and stolen bases (3). For the week, he batted .500 (8-for-16) with an OPS of 1.494. Covarrubias posted two doubles, one triple and one home run, and extended his hitting streak to 7 games.
The eight hits in four games raised his batting average to .339 on the year, which is second best on the team. For the season, Covarrubias has three home runs, two triples, six doubles, 20 RBI and 25 runs scored.
After the 3-1 week, the Trojans are now 23-12 on the year and 11-7 in Big Ten play, sitting fourth in the conference standings. USC plays four nonconference games at home this week, facing Hawai'i at LMU on Tuesday and then hosting Gonzaga at Great Park for a three-game series starting on Thursday.
