The Women of Troy won a third-place dual over the Lions at the Center of Effort Challenge

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The sixth-ranked USC beach volleyball team (23-7) exacted revenge for an early-season loss to the Lions with a 3-2 win over fourth-ranked Loyola Marymount (28-6) in the third-place dual at the Center of Effort Challenge at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex on Saturday, April 12.

The Women of Troy improved to 32-1 all-time against LMU and finish the weekend with a 17-3 all-time mark in San Luis Obispo.

In one of a trio of three-set finishes, USC sophomore Zoey Henson and junior Madison White put the dual on ice with a win over Jaeya Brach and Michelle Shaffer, 21-15, 17-21, 15-13. Henson-White delivered the clinching point and improved to 3-1 on the weekend to move to 21-6 on the season.

The Lions scored the first dual point from the No. 3 position where Lisa Luini and Abbey Thorup defeated junior Delaney Karl and graduate Ella Larkin in straight sets, 21-18, 21-16.

The Trojans answered with a win from the No. 2 position when freshman Kennedy Coakley and sophomore Ashley Pater took down Chloe Hooker and Vilhelmiina Prihti in two sets, 21-15, 22-20, to extend their streak to 20 wins and improve to 24-2. Coakley-Pater become just the eighth USC tandem to produce a 20-match win streak and are the first since All-Americans Megan Kraft and Sammy Slater won 25 in a row during the 2022 season (Feb. 24-May 6).

USC claimed a 2-1 lead with a three-set win by its No. 5 pair. There, freshman Macy Bolyard and sophomore Madison Goellner registered a 21-18, 13-21, 15-13 win over Giuliana Poletti Corrales and Tanon Rosenthal.

With four matches completed, court four went three sets and played through 155 rallies to decide a winner. In the end, Magdalena Rabitsch and Isabelle Reffel topped the Trojans' pair of graduate Maya Gessner and junior Mabyn Thomas, 16-21, 30-28, 31-29, to give the Lions a second point in the dual.

The Women of Troy conclude the regular season next week with a match against crosstown rival UCLA at Mapes Beach in Westwood, Calif. The teams take the sand for a 2:30 p.m. PT dual on Thursday (April 17) and will be shown live on Big Ten Plus (B1G+).
