No. 5 USC Beach Volleyball Falls to No. 1 UCLA

The Trojans got wins at the Nos. 3 and 4 positions but came up short against the Bruins in a 3-2 finish
LOS ANGELES – The fifth-ranked USC beach volleyball team (23-8) was defeated by No. 1-ranked crosstown rival UCLA (29-4) by a 3-2 count at Mapes Beach on Thursday, April 17.
The Women of Troy had a three-match win streak over the Bruins snapped in the loss and go to 28-21 in the all-time series. In duals played at Mapes Beach, USC fell to 1-8 in nine meetings.
UCLA scored the first point of the dual from the No. 2 position when Peri Brennan and Natalie Myszkowski closed out a 21-19, 21-19 win over freshman Kennedy Coakley and sophomore Ashley Pater to end the Trojan duo's 20-match win streak.
The Trojans answered to even the dual with a three-set win at the No. 2 position when junior Delaney Karl and graduate Ella Larkin put together a 16-21, 21-17, 15-7 win over Kaley Mathews and Sophie Moore.
The Bruins went in front, 2-1, with a win at the No. 5 position as Ensley Alden and Harper Cooper closed out freshman Macy Bolyard and sophomore Madison Goellner with a 21-19, 21-11 win.
The clinching point hit the board when UCLA's No. 1 pair of Maggie Boy and Sally Perez finished a 21-18, 21-18 win over sophomore Zoey Henson and junior Madison White.
With the dual decided, graduate Maya Gessner and junior Mabyn Thomas added a second USC point with a 21-18, 22-20 win at the No. 3 position over Kenzie Brower and Alexa Fernandez.
In a non-scoring exhibition match, sophomore Grace Hong and freshman Calinda Kok claimed a 21-13, 21-16 win over Madeline Bonanni and Tessa Van Winkle.
The Women of Troy now await seeding in the upcoming inaugural MPSF championship tournament. The league hosts its first-ever championship at Newland Beach courts in Huntington Beach next Wednesday-Friday (April 23-25) and will award an automatic berth into the NCAA championship to the winner. All matches at the championship will be shown on Big Ten Plus (B1G+) and the championship dual set for noon PT on Friday (April 25) will be shown live on Big Ten Network.
