No. 6 USC Beach Volleyball Drops 3-2 Decision to No. 5 Stanford

The Trojans had their seven-dual win streak halted by the surging Cardinal at the Center of Effort Challenge
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The sixth-ranked USC beach volleyball team (22-7) was defeated, 3-2, by No. 5 Stanford (23-7) in the Trojans' third dual at the Center of Effort Challenge at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex on Saturday, April 12.
The Trojans had a seven-dual win streak snapped by the Cardinal and fell to 17-3 all-time in meetings with Stanford; 2-2 this spring.
Stanford secured the three points it needed to win the dual with straight-set wins at the three, four, and five positions before the Trojans were able to collect two wins at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots.
The Cardinal scored its first point at the No. 3 position where Charlotta Bell and Kelly Belardi claimed a 21-12, 21-16 win over the Trojans' junior Delaney Karl and graduate Ella Larkin to snap a seven-match win streak by the USC duo. Karl-Larkin fell to 9-2 with the loss.
Stanford quickly went on top, 2-0, with a win at the No. 5 position where Daria Gusarova and Clara Stowell took down USC's pair of freshman Macy Bolyard and sophomore Madison Goellner in straight sets, 21-17, 21-19.
The dual was decided when the Cardinal's Chloe Hoffman and Logan Tusher completed a 21-17, 21-9 win at the No. 4 position over graduate Maya Gessner and junior Mabyn Thomas to hand the Trojan pair its first loss of the season (6-1).
With the dual already decided, USC scored its first of two points from the No. 2 position when freshman Kennedy Coakley and sophomore Ashley Pater defeated Avery Jackson and Brooke Rockwell to run their win streak to 19 consecutive matches, now tied for the eighth longest streak in program history (Abril Bustamante and Tina Graudina, 2018). Coakley and Pater improved to 23-2 with the win.
At the top court, sophomore Zoey Henson and junior Madison White put up a second USC point with a three-set win, 18-21, 21-16, 15-11, over Ruby Sorra and Taylor Wilson. The win makes Henson-White 2-1 on the weekend and moves the duo to 20-6 on the season. They are the second pair (Coakley-Pater) to reach 20 wins this spring.
The Women of Troy conclude the Center of Effort Challenge in the third-place dual set for 4:30 p.m. PT. The Trojans will take on either No. 1 TCU, No. 2 UCLA, or No. 4 Loyola Marymount.
