USC Men’s Golf Finishes Eighth at Cowboy Classic

MARICOPA, Ariz. – Sophomore Jack Jerge and senior Gavin Aurilia posted top-15 finishes individually at five-under par and four-under-par, respectively, at the Cowboy Classic. USC finished eighth out of 23 teams with rounds of 277-288-289 (-10), Tuesday, Apr. 1, at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club.

The Trojans finished out its second round this morning with scores of 70-72-73-73 to post an even-par 288.  This round was completed from day one when play was delayed due to darkness.  The third and final round saw more solid play from the Trojans with a 70-72-73-73 (+1) = 289 to bring the tournament total to 854 (-10).  Long Beach State won the tournament at 37-under par.

"We fought hard both days and I really saw some good, smart golf by our guys, said Head Coach Mark Hankins.  "It turned into a wedge fest and we didn't make quite enough birdies as a team to keep pace.  It's good experience moving forward and we don't have to wait long to get right back on the road at ASU. We get better each and ever event."

Jerge utilized a two-under-par round of 70 in the final round to move up eight spots into a tie for 11th in the field of 120 players. The sophomore posted rounds of 68-73-70 on route to his third top-25 finish of the season.

"It's a course I'm comfortable on, had a top 15 last year and then a top ten there earlier this year, so it's a place I know I can compete on," Jerge said. "I gave myself a lot of looks and was able to play a pretty solid round in the wind."

Aurilia wrapped up his second round tied with Jerge, as they both moved to five-under par after two rounds of play. The senior carded a final round 73 (+1) for a T-14 finish. Aurilia posted rounds of 69-70-73 to finish at four-under par total and claim his fifth top-25 finish of the season.
Freshman Jack Buchanan fired rounds of 73 (+1) in the second round and posted a final round 72 (E) on the final day.  Buchanan shot rounds of 69-73-72 for a three round total of two under-par garnering him a tie for 26^th just outside the top-25.

Junior Antonio Safa posted a final round 74 (+2) in support of the team and bring his three-round total to eight over par for the tournament.  Rounds of 71-79-74 posted him in a tie for 88^th.

Sophomore Nicolas Dominguez had a tough day, posting rounds of 77-72-85 for a tie for 114^th.

USC will compete in its final regular season tournament, the ASU Thunderbird Classic, held on Friday, Apr. 11, through Saturday, Apr. 12, at the Papago G.C. in Phoenix.
