USC Men’s Golf Sits in Seventh After Day One at Cowboy Classic

MARICOPA, Ariz. – Senior Gavin Aurilia sits tied for 10th at four-under par as USC men's golf is situated in seventh – one stroke out of the top five – out of 23 teams at 11-under par after almost two complete rounds at the Cowboy Classic on Monday, March 31 at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club.
The second round was called due to darkness, as the Trojans will be in a solid position as they return to the course for the second and third rounds tomorrow. USC, as a team, put together 277 (-11) in round one and is even-par through 16 holes in the second round. Iowa State currently leads the tournament at 23-under par and is through 15 in round two.
Aurilia opened the first, continuing his successful record at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club. He is four-under par for the tournament. In the first round, the senior had an array of scores, including one eagle—No. 16—four birdies, and three bogeys. He has limited his ups and downs in the second, posting two birdies and one bogey to put him at four-under-par.
Sophomore Jack Jerge held together the best first-round score for the Trojans, 68 (-4), and is now three-under par with three holes remaining in the second. So far, Jerge has produced ten birdies and has seven bogeys in 33 holes. Jerge is tied for 17th in the field and is two back of a top-ten placement.
Freshman Jack Buchanan is third on the squad, as he is two-under par for the tournament. He recorded a 69 (-3) in the first round and is one-over par with three holes to play. In the first round, Buchanan was propelled back his back nine, birding four holes and paring five. At two-under par, the freshman is tied for 27th.
Sophomore Nicolas Dominguez was five over par in the first round and is one over par here in the second round. Dominguez has four birdies and five bogeys in the second and will start up tomorrow on hole No. 1 after a par on No. 18. Dominguez is currently tied for 79th on the leaderboard.
After a strong start with a 71 (-1) in the first round, junior Antonio Safa has struggled to find the same rhythm in the second as he is seven-over par with two holes to play. Safa had a six-over-par back nine and has had two double bogeys in this second round. Safa is tied for 95th at six-over par.
USC will resume round two and conclude its tournament with round three following that, starting at 7:30 a.m. MT/PT on Tuesday, April 1, at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes G.C.
