USC Baseball Powers Past Arizona State, 6-3
March 18, 2025 | Baseball
Dean Carpentier had a two-run homer and an RBI triple, and Ethan Hedges hit a home run and recorded the save on the mound. USC moves to 12-8 overall with the win, while Arizona State falls to 14-7 on the year.
Carpentier sparked the offense with a run-scoring triple in the top of the second, but ASU would quickly jump in front in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of RBI knocks.
Hedges pulled the Trojans right back even in the top of the third, hitting a solo-shot to left for his sixth homer of the year. The 2-2 game lasted until the fifth, when Brayden Dowd hit a monster two-run shot to right to make it 4-2 in favor of USC.
Carpentier's two-run homer to dead center in the seventh gave USC six runs on the day. ASU scored one run in the bottom of the seventh, but that was it for the Sun Devils.
Freshman righty Andrew Johnson got the start and held ASU in check through his 4.0 innings of work, limiting the damage in the second and tossing scoreless third and fourth innings. After two runners reached to start the fifth, Sax Matson came in and needed just four pitches to get out of the jam. The lefty got the first batter to pop out, then induced a ground ball to short for a 6-4-3 double play.
Dylan Osborne pitched a scoreless sixth inning and allowed just one runner to reach in the seventh before exiting with two outs thanks to his two strikeouts. The inherited runner scored after Brodie Purcell entered, but Purcell would settle in to get the final out of the inning and then retire the side in order in the eighth. Hedges took over in the ninth, working around a two-out single to record his sixth save of the year.
