Grant Govel Named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

LOS ANGELES – After two scoreless relief outings, Grant Govel was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Monday (Feb. 24).

Govel was 1-0 on the week, allowing just one hit and no runs in 7.0 innings of work. Govel is the first Trojan to pick up a Big Ten weekly honor this season.

In a Tuesday contest at UC Irvine, Govel entered to start the fifth inning with USC trailing and did not allow a hit or run as the Trojans erased the deficit and picked up a 5-2 victory. He struck out six and walked one in the game.

Govel also tossed 2.0 scoreless innings at Rice over the weekend, allowing one hit and striking out two batters. Opposing hitters managed just a .045 batting average against the freshman righty.

For the season, Govel owns a 2.45 ERA, with nine strikeouts.

The Trojans are back in action on Tuesday at Cal State Fullerton and then host UCONN and No. 14 Vanderbilt, before heading to UCLA on Sunday.
