February 22, 2025 | Women's Beach Volleyball
The Trojans took down No. 2 TCU and No. 3 UCLA to conclude three days on Queen’s Beach
HONOLULU – The No. 1-ranked USC beach volleyball team (4-2) racked up a 3-2 win over No. 2 TCU (3-3) to conclude the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic on Queen's Beach on Saturday, Feb. 22.
The Women of Troy finish opening weekend with four wins over ranked opponents including against No. 2 No. 3, No. 11 and No. 12. The victory moves USC to 10-1 all-time against TCU and is the Trojans' fifth straight win over the Horned Frogs. USC moves to 31-6 all-time in the state of Hawai'i and to 159-20 when ranked No. 1 in the AVCA poll.
Paired for the first time, a duo of transfers delivered the clinching point for the Trojans. At court five, sophomore Jess Horwath—in her first action in the Cardinal and Gold—and graduate Ella Larkin dropped their first set against Sofia Izuzquiza and Stacy Reeves, but fought back to get a 21-19 win in set two and closed out the three-set win with a 15-11 decision in set three.
USC scored the first point of the dual with a 21-17, 21-13 win at the No. 2 position by freshman Kennedy Coakley and sophomore Ashley Pater over Hailey Hamlett and Anhelina Khmil. TCU evened the score when the Frogs' No. 1 pair of Daniela Alvarez and Tania Moreno closed out a 21-18, 21-18 win against sophomore Zoey Henson and junior Madison White. White was later chosen as the tournament's best blocker and awarded with a trophy at the conclusion of play.
The Trojans went in front, 2-1, on a straight set win at the No. 4 position by its duo of junior Delaney Karl and sophomore Kaileigh Truslow. There, USC's pair defeated Olivia Clines and Ana Vergara, 22-20, 21-18. Horwath-Larkin clinched the match soon after. TCU put up a second point with a three-set win at court three where Maria Gonzalez and Allanis Navas got by sophomore Madison Goellner and junior Mabyn Thomas, 18-21, 21-12, 15-9.
USC returns home to co-host the Battle for Los Angeles at Merle Norman Stadium next weekend. The Trojans take on Concordia (10 a.m. PT) and Pepperdine (noon) on Friday (Feb. 28) and then host Washington (10 a.m.) and Long Beach State (noon) on Saturday (March 1). Concordia will face Pepperdine at 2 p.m. on Friday and Long Beach State takes on Washington at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
UCLA and Loyola Marymount also serve as joint hosts of the three-location event. Moreover, the weekend marks the only two days the Trojans will play on home sand this spring. Friday's festivities will feature the 2024 NCAA championship banner reveal, and the Women of Troy will honor graduating student-athletes during Saturday's contests.
