USC Men's Water Polo Opens MPSF Play With 14-10 Victory Over No. 4 Stanford

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The No. 3 USC men's water polo team opened MPSF play with a 14-10 win over No. 4 Stanford on Saturday afternoon in the Bay Area.
The Trojans led wire-to-wire in the contest to move to 13-1 on the year and 1-0 in conference action. Stanford falls to 8-3, 0-1 with the loss.
Bernardo Herzer led the way in goal, stopping 13 shots with a 56.5% save rate. A trio of USC players had three goals in the match, with Jack Vort, Andrej Grgurevic and Mihailo Vukazic leading the team in scoring.
USC set the tone early, shutting out Stanford in the opening quarter, 3-0, and riding that advantage the rest of the way. The Cardinal scored first in the second period, but that was as close as they would come as USC answered with a goal 28 seconds later and took a 6-2 lead into the break. The teams played even the through the final two quarters.
The Trojans held Stanford to just 1-of-14 on powerplay attempts, while converting 3-of-10 on their own 6-on-5 chances.
