LOS ANGELES – Following two NCAA qualifying bids, USC sophomore Jana Hossam and freshman Dani Borruel have earned Big Ten Conference weekly honors. Hossam was named the conference Player of the Week, while Borruel claimed the Freshman of the Week honor.
Competing at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships in San Diego, Hossam reached the championship final and split the title with Pepperdine's Anastasiia Gechkina. Hossam downed five opponents to reach the championship final, beating one ranked opponent and her own teammate, Krisha Mahendran (quarterfinals), along the way. The sophomore was also a strong contender for the doubles title, playing alongside Mahendran. Together the duo won four matches, including a quarterfinal win over the No. 1 seeded UCLA duo of Fernandez/Crossley (ranked No. 16), to reach the semifinals. Hossam and Mahendran ultimately fell to their Trojan teammates Lily Fairclough and Borruel in the semifinal.
Borruel had a stellar weekend of play, winning the doubles title alongside Lily Fairclough and reaching the singles round of 32. As a pair, Borruel and Fairclough became the first Trojans to win an ITA Regional Doubles title since 2015 and the eighth all-time in school history. Following her singles round of 32 loss, Borruel rebounded to claim two extra matches and finish the weekend on a high note.
This award is the first conference career honor for Borruel and the second Freshman of the Week honor for the Women of Troy. Hossam, who was a two-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week last season, picked up her first Player of the Week honor today, Oct. 22.
