Two Trojans In Reach Of Olympic Men’s Water Polo Bronze In Paris
August 09, 2024 | Men's Water Polo
Team USA’s Hannes Daube and Marko Vavic will fight for a spot on the podium on Sunday.
USC men's water polo has a program-record seven Trojans in the Olympic field in Paris, and two of those Trojans have a shot at capturing a medal with Team USA's spot in the bronze-medal match. USC teammates for the 2018 NCAA championship and Olympic teammates for the second time, Hannes Daube and Marko Vavic have both played key roles in getting the United States into position for what could be its first medal since 2008. Team USA faces Hungary in the bronze-medal game at 1:35 a.m. PT on Sunday (Aug. 11).
Sunday is the final day of Olympic competition in Paris, and all seven USC men's water polo players will be in on the action. In addition to Daube and Vavic with the USA, placement games are on tap for four Aussie Trojans — Blake Edwards, Lachlan Edwards, Jacob Mercep and Nic Porter — and for Olympic veteran Kostas Genidounias with Greece. Three-time Olympian and NCAA champion Genidounias, who won silver with Greece in the 2020 Games, will play for fifth place in Paris starting at 12 a.m. on Sunday against Spain. USC's Australian continent, meanwhile, features two first-time Olympians in 2018 NCAA champions Jacob Mercep and Nic Porter. They'll have two-time Olympians and brothers Blake and Lachlan Edwards in the water with them as the Stingers wrap their 2024 Games in the seventh-place game at 10:35 p.m. PT on Saturday (Aug. 10) night.
USC's Olympic men's water polo history dates back to 1928, with Trojans featuring in the past seven consecutive Games from 2000-2024. USC men have won two gold and two silver medals entering these 2024 games, giving Daube and Vavic a shot at bringing USC its first men's water polo bronze.
Men's Olympic Placement Games:
Seventh Place: Sat. 10:35 p.m. - Australia vs. Italy
Fifth Place: Sun. 12 a.m. PT - Greece vs. Spain
BRONZE: Sun. 1:35 a.m. - United States vs. Hungary
