USC Baseball's Austin Overn, William Watson Selected on Second Day of MLB Draft
July 15, 2024 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – USC Baseball's Austin Overn and William Watson were selected on the second day of the 2024 MLB Draft on Monday (July 15).
Overn was taken in the third round by the Baltimore Orioles and Watson was selected by the New York Mets in the seventh round. They are the 350th and 351st Trojans selected in the history of the MLB Draft and continue USC's streak of having a player selected in every MLB Draft since its inception in 1965. The draft continues on Wednesday with the final 10 rounds (11-20) starting at 11 a.m.
Overn, the 97th overall pick in the draft, was selected as a draft-eligible sophomore after two years at USC. In his two seasons with the Trojans, Overn has started all 117 games the team has played, earning Freshman All-American recognition, All-Pac-12 honors and Pac-12 All-Defensive Team accolades twice. Over the last two years, he has slashed .291/.376/.495, with 70 RBI and 111 runs scored. He set the USC single-season record with 14 triples in 2023 and sits second on USC's career triples list with 19. Overn also has 12 homers and 23 doubles, to go along with a team-high 33 stolen bases since arriving at USC in 2023. Overn is USC's highest draft selection since Wyatt Strahan was taken in the third round by the Cincinnati Reds in 2014.
Watson, the 203rd overall pick, came to USC as a junior transfer from San Joaquin Delta College prior to the 2024 season. He started the season pitching out of the bullpen but moved into a starter role midway through the year and became one of the Trojans most effective arms by the end of the season. In 16 appearances and nine starts, Watson posted a 3.93 ERA with 46 strikeouts and just 27 walks. He posted his best start of the year in the Pac-12 tournament against No. 23 Oregon (a 4-2 win), giving up one run in 6.0 innings, with seven strikeouts and two walks. Watson threw at least 5.0 innings in each of his last seven starts, giving up more than three runs only twice (four both times).
