May 18, 2024 | Baseball
IRVINE, Calif. – The USC baseball team closed out the regular season with a sweep of Utah thanks to a 5-3 victory over the Utes on Saturday afternoon at Great Park. The victory secures fourth place in the Pac-12 for the second straight season for the Trojans.
It was USC's sixth straight victory as the Trojans take their longest win streak of the season into next week's Pac-12 Tournament. As the fourth seed in the tournament, the Trojans will once again face Utah, the No. 7 seed, on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. to open postseason action. USC then faces the No. 3 seed Oregon on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
Saturday's win moves the Trojans to 28-27 overall on the year and 17-12 in Pac-12 play, while Utah falls to 32-21 overall and 16-14 in conference action. USC was 17-13 in the Pac-12 last season, marking the first time since 2014 and 2015 that the Trojans have had back-to-back winning season in conference play. It is also the first time since 2001 and 2002 that USC has had at least 17 wins in Pac-12 play for consecutive seasons.
It was another complete effort by the Trojans on Saturday as the USC pitching staff held Utah to three runs on six hits and the Trojan bats scored five runs on 12 hits.
On USC's senior day, senior starter Tyler Stromsborg tossed 6.0 innings and allowed just two unearned runs in the sixth inning. Brodie Purcell worked the seventh before Xavier Martinez came in to throw 2.0 scoreless innings and pick up the save. Stromsborg had four strikeouts and no walks, and Martinex had three strikeouts and no walks.
Dean Carpentier sparked the offense with a solo-homer in the third as USC would score three in the inning, also getting an RBI double from Jacob Galloway and an RBI single from Kevin Takeuchi. The Trojans scored two more in the fifth to go up 5-0.
Utah finally got on the board with two runs in the top of the sixth inning, and the Utes would score their lone earned run of the game in the seventh to cut it to a one-run game, but that was as close as they would come as Martinez shut it down the rest of the way.
