USC Men's Tennis Drops Final Leg of Pac-12 Road trip in Oregon
April 07, 2024 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – USC men's tennis (5-13, 0-4 Pac-12) continues its struggles, as it fell to Oregon (13-10, 2-3 Pac-12) in a heartbreaking 4-3 loss on Sunday, Apr. 7 in Oregon.
For the eighth straight game, the Trojans have dropped the doubles point, and now are 0-12 when they can't capture the initial point. In doubles USC for the second consecutive time fell in a tiebreak, as it claimed the No. 3 court, but lost on courts No. 1 and No. 2. The lone pairing to capture a victory was freshman Volodymyr Iakubenko and graduate student Niroop Vallabhaneni. This was only the second time that this duo has taken the court, as they first made an appearance in the Washington dual; and are now 1-1 overall as a pairing.
In singles the Trojans split all the matchups, as they secured three wins against the Ducks. Junior Karl Lee and junior Peter Makk claimed their victories almost simultaneously as Lee won 6-2, 6-2 and Makk won 6-3, 6-3. The third USC player to take home a dub was senior Lodewijk Weststrate as he took it to three sets before winning 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. With the score being tied 3-3 it was all up to Iakubenko in the No. 2 spot, but he could not stop Oregon's rally, as he dropped the final match 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
USC returns to action in a doubleheader as it takes on Pacific and Cal Poly on Wednesday, Apr. 10 in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
