Trojans Slug Their Way to Series Win With 9-5 Victory Over Huskies

IRVINE, Calif. – The USC baseball team put up nine runs on 12 hits, including three triples and two homers, to take down Washington, 9-5, on Saturday afternoon at Great Park.

After a 6-2 victory on Friday night, the win gives USC a shot at a sweep on Sunday as the Trojans move to 14-16 overall on the year and 8-5 in Pac-12 play. Washington falls to 9-14-1 with the loss and 3-8 in conference action. The Trojans have won six of their last seven and nine of their last 12 games.

Ethan Hedges had two triples on the day, sparking a three-run second inning with his first to give USC an early 3-0 lead. Austin Overn also tripled in the second, driving in a pair of runs. Overn had a triple and a homer on the day. Overn's second-inning triple was the 19^th of his career, moving him to within one of the USC career record.

Washington scored two in the third to pull within one, but Dean Carpentier hit his first collegiate homer in the fourth to make it 4-2. A four-run sixth inning would break it open for the Trojans. Hedges led the inning off with a triple and was driven in by Kevin Takeuchi for the second time on the day. Jacob Galloway was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and then Ryan Jackson capped the inning with a two-run single. Overn plated USC's ninth run with a solo-homer in the eighth, his fifth of the year.

Washington mounted a late rally and scored three in the ninth, but it stalled out after Andrew Harbour came in and got the final out. Tyler Stromsborg was awarded the win after tossing 2.2 scoreless relief innings, giving up two hits and no walks. Fisher Johnson and Mason Edwards each tossed 1.1 innings out of the pen without giving up an earned run. Jared Feikes started on the mound, going 2.2 innings and giving up two unearned runs.
