April 05, 2024 | Baseball
IRVINE, Calif. – Ryan Jackson had a four-hit day and the Trojan pitchers held Washington to just two runs as the USC baseball team took down the Huskies 6-2 in the series opener at Great Park on Friday night.
Jackson drove in three of the Trojans' six runs as USC moves to 13-16 overall on the year and 7-5 in Pac-12 play. Washington falls to 9-13-1 with the loss and 3-7 in conference action. The Trojans have won five of their last six and eight of their last 11 games.
Eric Hammond got the start on short notice after starter Caden Aoki was a late scratch and Hammond proceeded to toss 5.0 innings and give up just one run to pick up the win. Brodie Purcell threw 1.1 scoreless relief innings and Xavier Martinez tossed 1.2 innings, entering in the seventh with two on and one out, only to get a strikeout and fly out to end the threat. The Huskies loaded the bases in the ninth against Josh Blum, but the USC closer got top Washington hitter Aiva Arquette to fly out and end the game.
USC trailed 1-0 heading into the fourth, but would score two in the inning to take the lead. Ethan Hedges hit a sac fly to tie the game and then Carson Wells doubled in Jackson to put the home team in front. Jackson extended the USC lead in the fifth with a two-run double. His second RBI double of the game came in the seventh to make it 5-1.
Arquette hit a solo-homer in the eighth to make it a three-run game, but USC got the run back thanks to a wind-aided RBI double from Abbrie Covarrubias.
