Trojan Arms Lead USC Baseball to 4-1 Win Over Arizona

IRVINE, Calif. – Eric Hammond threw 6.0 strong innings and the USC pitching staff held Arizona to just three hits as the Trojans took down the Wildcats 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Great Park in Irvine.
The only run allowed by USC was in the first inning as the Trojans improve to 4-11 overall and 1-2 in Pac-12 play. Arizona falls to 7-7, 2-1 Pac-12.
Mason White homered in the first inning for the visitors, but that was it as Hammond allowed the one run on three hits and one walk, while striking out three. Xavier Martinez entered with a runner on in the seventh and proceeded to strike out the next two batters and get a popup. Martinez tossed 2.0 scoreless before giving way to Josh Blum, who picked up the save.
Arizona's lone run was answered by a Ryan Jackson RBI single in the bottom of the first and Kevin Takeuchi sacrificed Austin Overn home in the third to give the Trojans the lead. Takeuchi doubled in the first and was scored by Jackson and Overn tripled in the third in front of Takeuchi.
Carson Wells had an RBI groundout in the sixth and then Overn capped the scoring with a homer in the seventh.

The Trojans host CBU on Tuesday at Great Park before heading north to take on Stanford in another Pac-12 series this coming weekend.
