USC Men’s Tennis Stops a Five-Match Skid with a Sweep of Michigan
February 27, 2024 | Men's Tennis
Oscar Weightman picks up his first clincher of the season, as he bested #108 Jacob Bickersteth 2-6, 7-5, 6-2
LOS ANGELES – USC men's tennis (5-5) returns to its winning ways, as it sweeps Michigan (5-7) 4-0 on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at Marks Tennis Stadium.
The Trojans stopped their five-game losing skid, as they won both the doubles point and all three singles matches that finished in the dual. USC secured its revenge, as the last time the Trojans stepped on the court versus Michigan, they were bested 4-3 in last year's NCAA Super Regional dual.
To start doubles play, USC played it close as they lost the advantage on court No. 3 but followed suit with a win on court No. 2. The duo of junior Karl Lee and sophomore Oscar Weightman secured the win 6-4, as the No. 1 squad of junior Peter Makk and senior Lodewijk Weststrate went into a tiebreak for the doubles point; in that tiebreak the pair dominated the #30 duo in the country as they won it 7-0 and won the doubles point with a 7-6(0) victory.
On the singles side, Makk cared over that momentum as he pulled the upset on the #18 player in the country, Gavin Young. The junior picked up the first singles victory of the afternoon 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Volodymyr Iakubenko followed with a quick 6-2, 6-4 win.
The story of singles was that of Weightman, the sophomore was playing at the No. 2 spot for the first time all season and was facing his second-ranked opponent this season. After losing the first set 6-1, Weightman fell behind, but rallied in the second 7-5, before finishing off the Trojans sweep with a 6-2 third-set win.
USC returns to action at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 7, as it faces Pepperdine in another home match at Marks Tennis Stadium.
