Courtnall, Sampaio, Hayes Earn All-America Recognition
December 11, 2024 | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES – The United Soccer Coaches announced their 2024 All-America teams this week and three USC women's soccer standouts received the honor. Brooklyn Courtnall and Helena Sampaio were named to the first team and Maile Hayes was named to the third team.
In a season full of firsts, Courtnall and Sampaio's inclusion on the first team marks the first time in program history that two USC players have earned first-team honors in the same season. The two first-team nods give USC a total of 10 First-Team All-Americans in its history. The three total players to earn the award also marks the first time since 2018 that USC has had three All-Americans in the same season.
The Trojans are coming off a season in which the team won its first outright conference title, posted its first-ever undefeated conference season and earned the program's first No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Sampaio and Courtnall were also recently named semifinalists for the MAC Hermann Trophy, marking the first time the Trojans have had multiple semifinalists for the prestigious award.
BROOKLYN COURTNALL – ALL-AMERICA FIRST TEAM
Courtnall is coming off a senior season in which she anchored the USC backline, starting all 23 games at center back and leading all USC field players with 2,009 minutes played. Courtnall played a full 90+ minutes all but five times on the year and all but once in the last 14 games. She led the Trojans to 11 shutouts for the season and a 0.80 goals-against average. The USC defense held 17 of their 23 opponents under 10 shots and eight times held teams to five shots or less in a game. Courtnall served as the USC captain this season, was named to the All-North Region first team and was also named to the All-Big Ten first team. She scored her first career goal in the Trojans' opening game of the NCAA Tournament.
HELENA SAMPAIO – ALL-AMERICA FIRST TEAM
Sampaio solidified herself as one of the top midfielders in the country during her senior season, earning Big Ten Midfielder of the Year honors along with All-Big Ten and All-North Region first team recognition. She was second on the team in points with 17, scoring five goals and leading the Trojans with seven assists. The Brazil native appeared in all 23 games for USC, with four of her goals being game-winners, including a last minute free kick goal from 25 yards out against Penn State during the regular season. Sampaio recorded points in three of USC's four postseason games en route to an NCAA Quarterfinal appearance for the Trojans, scoring goals against Sacramento State and Wisconsin, and providing an assist against Saint Louis.
MAILE HAYES – ALL-AMERICA THIRD TEAM
While both Sampaio and Courtnall were playing in their fourth season as Trojans, Hayes was a transfer addition to the program in the offseason and she proved herself to be one of the most productive transfers in the country. She was USC's offensive spark all year, with the senior forward leading USC in points with 27, and 11 goals. Her 11 goals were tied for fourth in the Big Ten and her 27 points were good for fifth in the conference. Both totals are career highs for Hayes, who earned her second First-Team All-Conference nod this year (first at Texas A&M in 2022) and first All-Region first team award. She appeared in all 23 games and made 22 starts. Hayes tallied 8 points and 3 goals in the NCAA Tournament for the Trojans, with an assist in the opening round against Sacramento State, a two-goal performance along with an assist against Saint Louis, and her third goal coming against Wisconsin.
