USC Women's Soccer Draws No. 1 Seed in NCAA Tournament
November 11, 2024 | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES – The full NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament field was announced on Monday, and the USC women's soccer team earned the program's first-ever No. 1 seed in the postseason bracket. The Trojans will host Sacramento State in the opening round on Sunday (Nov. 17) at 2 p.m.
USC's first-round game will be at the Dignity Health Sports Park Track Stadium where the team has played the majority of its home games this season while construction continues on Rawlinson Stadium. Broadcast and ticket information for the postseason contest will be released soon.
ROAD TO THE POSTSEASON
Playing its first season as a member of the Big Ten, USC won the conference's regular season title, going 10-0-1 in league play to secure the program's first undefeated conference season and first outright conference title. USC posted an overall record of 15-1-3 through the regular season, suffering its only loss on the road at then-No. 1 Stanford on Sept. 8. After that lone loss, the Trojans finished the regular season going unbeaten over their final 13 games, at one point winning eight in a row. USC is ranked No. 4 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and No. 5 in the RPI rankings coming into the postseason.
USC TOURNAMENT HISTORY
USC is making its 23rd NCAA Postseason appearance this year and 11th straight dating back to 2014. USC has won two National Championships in its history, becoming the first Pac-12 program to win a title in 2007 and then the first program from the conference to win a second title in 2016.
The Trojans have only missed the postseason nine times in the program's 32-year history and have advanced past at least the first round 14 times. USC has been a national seed in the NCAA field each of the last 10 years. Three times in program history (2019, 2016, 2007) the Trojans have garnered No. 2 seeds in the field, but this year marks the first time USC has been a No. 1 seed.
THE OPPONENT
Sacramento State enters the tournament as an automatic qualifier after winning the Big Sky Conference Tournament. The Hornets finished the regular season 5-6-9 overall and were fifth in the Big Sky with a 3-2-3 conference record. Sacramento State won the conference tournament by advancing on PK's three straight times to seal the automatic bid.
USC and Sacramento State have only faced off one time in their history, with the Trojans winning an early season nonconference matchup at home in 1995, 7-0. This year marks the third ever NCAA Tournament appearance for the Hornets and the first time the program has been in the postseason since 2010.
