Maile Hayes' Brace Leads No. 21 USC Women's Soccer to 2-0 Win Over Oregon
October 05, 2024 | Women's Soccer
CARSON, Calif. – After celebrating Senior Day pregame, senior forward Maile Hayes scored twice to lead the No. 21 USC women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Oregon on Saturday afternoon at Dignity Health Sports Park.
It was the seventh shutout of the year for USC as the Trojans remain unbeaten in Big Ten play, moving to 9-1-2 overall and 5-0-1 in conference action. Oregon falls to 5-8-0 overall and 1-5-0 in the Big Ten.
Hayes scored once in each half, putting the Trojans on the board in the 18th minute when she banged home her own rebound on a shot in the box. She would make it 2-0 in the 63rd minute, getting a feed from Simone Jackson in the box. Hayes, who transferred from Texas A&M this offseason, leads USC with six goals on the year.
The Trojan attack was relentless, firing 31 shots in the game and putting nine on target. Conversely, Oregon had just three shots in the game, with only one coming in the second half. The Ducks played most of the second half a player down after keeper Maddy Goldberg was shown a red card for committing a foul on Kayla Colbert to deny a goal scoring opportunity. USC also had a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Through six games in the Big Ten, USC has posted five shutouts, giving up its only two conference goals in a 2-2 tie with Minnesota.
SCORING
18' – USC: Maile Hayes (unassisted) – Hayes got the ball deep in the box and her initial attempt was blocked, but she followed it up and knocked it home near the goal line.
63' – USC: Maile Hayes (assisted by Simone Jackson, Helena Sampaio) – Sampaio sent a ball up the left sideline for Jackson, who ran onto it and sent a one-touch pass to Hayes who was streaking down the middle. Hayes took a touch to the left of the keeper and slipped it home inside the near left post.
