October 29, 2024 | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES – After leading the No. 6 USC women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over No. 8 UCLA to clinch the Big Ten Regular Season Championship on Sunday, USC's Maile Hayes was named the conference's Offensive Player of the Week and Laurence Gladu was named Goalkeeper of the Week on Tuesday (Oct. 29).
Hayes scored the game-winning goal in the first half and Gladu recorded the shutout as Sunday's win capped an unbeaten conference regular season for the Trojans.
Hayes went 5-hole to beat the UCLA keeper in the 36th minute for the only goal of the game. It is Hayes' second Big Ten weekly award, but the fourth week in a row that a USC player has earned one of the honors, with Hayes winning her first Offensive Player of the Week award on Oct. 8, Ines Derrien earning Freshman of the Week on Oct. 15, and Helena Sampaio winning Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 22.
Hayes' goal was her team-leading eighth of the season to go along with her two assists so far this year. She played 70 minutes in the win over crosstown rival UCLA and she has appeared in every game this season for the Trojans, compiling 1024 minutes and starting in 16 of the 17 games.
Gladu's shutout against UCLA to clinch the regular season title was her ninth clean sheet of the season and lowered her goals against average to 0.71 on the year and 0.55 in Big Ten play.
The top-seeded Trojans travel to Minnesota for the Big Ten Conference Tournament this coming week, taking on the winner of the Ohio State/Minnesota on Sunday at 10 am PT/12 pm CT.
