USC Baseball Alum Kyle Hurt Makes MLB Debut with Dodgers
September 12, 2023 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – USC baseball alum Kyle Hurt made his Major League debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night at Chavez Ravine, becoming the 120th Trojan to play in the MLB.
Hurt's debut came in an 11-2 Dodger win over the San Diego Padres, as he was called upon for 2.0 relief innings. Hurt retired Fernando Tatis Jr., Juan Soto and Manny Machado in order to record a scoreless eighth and then struck out the side in the ninth.
Hurt's call up to the big leagues was announced just hours before Los Angeles' Tuesday night matchup with the Padres and comes as the team makes a push towards the playoffs. He split the 2023 minor-league season between double and triple-A, putting up the best strikeout rate in Minor League Baseball (145 K's in 88.1 innings).
Hurt was selected in the 5th round of the 2020 MLB Draft by the Miami Marlins and was traded to the Dodgers in 2021. He progressed steadily through the Dodgers' farm system, splitting his time between rookie and A-ball in 2021, single and double-A in 2022 and the double and triple-A this year.
The big righty spent three collegiate seasons at USC (2018-20) where he tossed 172.2 innings, striking out 170 batters in 30 starts and six relief appearances. He led USC in strikeouts each of his last two seasons and posted a career low 3.71 ERA in a shortened 2020 campaign.
Hurt came to USC from Torrey Pines HS where he was a Perfect Game All-American and All-CIF performer.
He is the second USC alum to make an MLB debut this season, joining former teammate Blake Sabol (2017-19) who debuted for the San Francisco Giants early in the year.
USC has produced 120 big leaguers over the years — more than any other NCAA program. Trojan alums boast 67 All-Star appearances, 29 World Series appearances, nine Cy Young awards, three Hall of Fame inductions, three Rookie of the Year Awards, one American League MVP and one World Series MVP.
