2023 USC Women's Soccer Schedule Announced
June 20, 2023 | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES – The USC women's soccer program announced its 2023 schedule today (June 20), with the Trojans opening the 18-match campaign at home on August 17.
The Trojans host Michigan for their opener on Thursday, Aug. 17 and then welcome Georgia on Sunday, Aug. 20. USC also hits the road for a pair of big-time non-conference contests, heading to Duke on Aug. 24 and then down the road to Chapel Hill to face last year's College Cup runners-up, North Carolina, on Aug. 27. Pac-12 play opens on Sept. 22.
NON-CONFERENCE HOME GAMES
USC opens the season with the aforementioned contests against Michigan and Georgia, and then also hosts non-conference matchups against Purdue (Aug. 31), Utah Valley (Sept. 7) and New Mexico State (Sept. 14). Five of the Trojans' seven non-conference matches are at home, with the Trojans playing a pair of games each of the first two weeks of the season, and then single games each of the following three weeks leading into Pac-12 action.
The two opening games of the season will feature some familiar faces for USC fans, as Michigan is coached by former Trojan assistant coach Jen Klein, and Georgia is headed by former USC head coach Keidane McAlpine.
NON-CONFERENCE ROAD GAMES
The Trojans' only two non-conference road games are the contests at Duke on Thursday, Aug. 24 and then North Carolina on Sunday, Aug. 27. It will not be the first time that a USC team has traveled east to face the two perennial powerhouses. USC has played at Duke twice before, with the last time coming in 2015, and the Trojans have played in Chapel Hill three times previously, with the last meeting coming in the quarterfinals of the 2019 NCAA Tournament. The Trojans will be looking for the first win at either school.
The opener at Duke will also be a bit of a homecoming for USC Head Coach Jane Alukonis, who played her collegiate soccer for the Blue Devils from 2006-09.
PAC-12 ROAD GAMES
The Trojans open conference play at Utah on Sept. 22, and then head to Washington State (Sept. 28) and Washington (Oct. 1) the following week. After two weeks at home, USC will be back on the road against Arizona State (Oct. 19) and Arizona (Oct. 22), before closing the season at crosstown rivals UCLA on Nov. 3.
PAC-12 HOME GAMES
USC hosts Oregon (Oct. 5) and Oregon State (Oct. 8) for its first conference home games and then follows with Colorado (Oct. 14) the next week. After their trip to Arizona, the Trojans play their last two home games of the regular season against Stanford (Oct. 26) and Cal (Oct. 29).
STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE
The Trojans again play one of the most challenging schedules in the country, with 50% of USC's opponents (9-of-18) appearing in the 2022 NCAA Tournament. UCLA and North Carolina played for the NCAA title last year, with the Bruins taking the crown. Duke made it to the quarterfinals of the 2022 Tournament, and Stanford and Georgia made appearances in the second round. Arizona State, Cal, Utah Valley and New Mexico State also made the NCAA postseason in 2022.
Four Trojan opponents also finished last season in the final rankings of the year, with UCLA at No. 1, UNC at No. 2, Duke at No. 6 and Stanford at No. 16. Georgia and Cal were both receiving votes in the final poll as well. USC finished the season tied for No. 23 in the coaches poll.
FAREWELL TOUR
USC will be playing its final season in the Pac-12 this year, after announcing in June of 2022 that the school would be making a move to the Big 10 starting in fall of 2024. UCLA also announced it would be moving to the Big 10 in conjunction with the Trojans. USC has a pair of future conference opponents on the schedule in Michigan and Purdue.
RAWLINSON STADIUM
The Trojans also made a big announcement this past week (June 12), when the University announced plans to build a new soccer and lacrosse stadium. Rawlinson Stadium will replace and expand upon the current site of play for the teams: Soni McAlister Field at 30th and Hoover streets just north of the University Park Campus. The $38 million project will break ground before the end of the year and is scheduled to be completed early in 2025.
YEAR TWO
USC is entering its second season under Head Coach Jane Alukonis in 2023. The Trojans finished last season 12-3-3 overall and 8-1-2 (3rd) in the Pac-12. USC made its ninth straight postseason appearance in Alukonis' first season at the helm and finished the year No. 23 in the rankings. USC reached as high as No. 8 in the polls, had a 4-0 record against ranked opponents and picked up big wins over No. 1 UCLA and No. 7 Stanford.
