2023 Cardinal & Gold World Series Central

LOS ANGELES – As the USC baseball team nears the end of the fall practice season, the Trojans will play their annual five-game Cardinal & Gold World Series at Dedeaux Field.
The action will start on Thursday with game one at 3:30 p.m. See the entire schedule below and check back in to this page for game recaps.

Game 1 - The USC baseball team began its Cardinal & Gold World Series today (Nov. 9) with Cardinal getting the bats hot late to take the opener 9-3.
It was a four-run sixth inning that ultimately broke it open for Cardinal, after the teams traded blows through the first five innings. Abbrie Covarrubias gave Cardinal the lead with an RBI double and a Kaikea Harrison RBI single added to the advantage, pushing the lead to 7-3.
In the fourth inning, Gold captain Connor Clift hit a solo shot to left field to give Gold its first lead, but Cardinal captain Jacob Galloway wasted no time tying the game with an RBI double in the top of the fifth. Galloway finished 2-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
For the Cardinal the bullpen held strong. Brodie Purcell kept the game tied, picking up a strike out with the bases loaded in the fifth. An inning later, Blum kept the Gold squad at bay with a shutout inning.
Both Tyler Stromsborg (Gold) and Caden Aoki (Cardinal), the two starters, gave up a pair of runs in the first before settling down and finishing three strong after a scoreless second and third inning.
The two squads will face off again on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 11:00 AM
Game 2 -- The USC baseball team played Game 2 of the Cardinal & Gold World Series today, and Cardinal walked it off in the bottom of the seventh on a sac fly, beating the Gold team 3-2.
The Gold Squad, captained by Tyler Stromsborg and Connor Clift, held a lead of 2-0 until the bottom of the fourth when Austin Overn and Luca DiPaolo gave the Cardinal squad two runs to tie it up. In the bottom of the seventh JT Waldon led off with a double and the Cardinal team won the game with a walk-off sac fly from Ryan Jackson.
Eric Hammond led Gold's pitching with three shutout innings and three strikeouts. Cardinal Pitcher Brodie Purcell tossed two shutout innings in relief and Xavier Martinez gave up one run in three innings. Carson Wells also homered for Gold.

GAME 3 -- After postponing Game Three due to rain on Wednesday, the Gold team captured its first win of the Cardinal & Gold World Series, taking down team Cardinal 8-2.
Team Gold captain Connor Clift created momentum in the first inning with a 2-RBI double. Freshman Riley Hunsaker followed by driving in Clift with an RBI single to give the Gold squad an early 3-0 lead.
Clift was the star of the day for the Gold team. Along with his big hit in the first, he added a home run in the fifth, which is his second of the series. In total Clift had three RBI and three runs scored on the day to go along with the two extra-base hits.
The pitching also dominated for team Gold, throwing seven scoreless innings in game three. Sax Matson got the start and went two scoreless including setting the side down in order in his final frame.
In the third inning the Gold team doubled the lead with Ethan Hedges and Carson Wells crossing on a pair of wild pitches. Hunsaker tallied his second RBI with a sacrifice fly to once again bring home Clift.
The Cardinal squad clawed back late thanks to Austin Overn who scored on wild pitch following his triple in the sixth. An inning later Luca DiPaolo scored on a wild pitch of his own.
With the win team Gold gets back into the series trailing 2-1.

Game 4 -- A day after Gold took game three, Cardinal bounced back to take game four 2-0, and win the Cardinal & Gold World Series, 3-1.
It was the first shutout of the Cardinal & Gold World Series with captain Caden Aoki getting the start. After going three innings in game one, Aoki dealt four scoreless innings allowing just one hit. Mason Edwards took over from there, throwing 2.2 innings allowing just one hit as well. Josh Blum came in with two outs in the top of the seventh and closed the door with a strikeout.
The offense came early for the Cardinal squad. In the first Ryan Jackson crossed on a double steal scoring from third. In the third Austin Overn singled, stole second and third before scoring on an RBI groundout from Jacob Galloway.
Tyler Stromsborg got the start and went four innings for team Gold. He allowed just the two runs and kept the Gold squad close. Garren Rizzo dealt two scoreless innings for Gold in the losing effort.
Game Five takes place on Sunday with first pitch at 11 a.m.

Game 5 -- In the finale of the Cardinal & Gold World Series, Team Cardinal defeated Team Gold 9-1 on Sunday afternoon at Dedeaux Field.
The Cardinal Squad got the scoring started in the second with an RBI groundout by JT Waldon, but it was in the fourth when Team Cardinal took control. An RBI single by Waldon, picking up his second RBI of the day, and Kaikea Harrison added an RBI single of his own to make it 3-0.
That is all the Cardinal pitching staff would need. Xavier Martinez got the start for team Cardinal and went four strong innings. Andrew Harbour relieved him, pitching in two more scoreless frames and Josh Blum came in and closed the door.
The fifth inning provided more fireworks for the Cardinal squad thanks to Abbrie Covarrubias who picked up a pair of RBIs on a single and would come around to score on a wild pitch. Team Cardinal would add another run in the sixth and tally two more in the seventh.
Team Gold would get on the board as Dean Carpentier came in to score on a wild pitch in the seventh.
Team Cardinal takes the series 4-1 and ends the fall ball season. USC Baseball will be back in action to begin the regular season in 2024.
